Please Note – This article was written prior to the completion of yesterday’s games so all player statistics are as of 4/18.
Max Scherzer (Washington - $11,400) – We have a few top-tier options on today’s slate of game, however, after looking at all numbers, Scherzer gets the nod over Kershaw, Syndergaard, and Verlander. Mad Max has been doing what has come expected of him so far this season and comes into this matchup with a 3-1 overall record while posting a 1.33 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, and an impressive 12.7 K/9 ratio. Scherzer has had a ton of success against the Dodgers in the past as he is holding the current Dodgers lineup to just a .148 avg (13-88) with has a 35% strikeout rate against the Dodgers.
Lance Lynn (Minnesota - $7,100) – My “low-cost” option tonight will be Lance Lynn of Minnesota. Lynn had a rough first start to his season, however, looked solid in his recent performance against Houston, going 5 innings giving up no runs while striking out 9. Lynn has an impressive K/9 ratio of 12.0 and gets to face a Tampa Bay lineup in which he is currently holding to a .213 avg (13-61) and .546 OPS. Lynn has been great at RHB’s this season, holding them to just a .143 avg and as I’m just not scared of the Rays offensive lineup, I can see Lynn getting in 6 innings tonight while striking out 7-9 and picking up a win.
I also agree with Bill on our show last night that Sean Newcomb is a good streaming option tonight. The left-hander has a ton of upside and certainly has the ability to pile up some K’s.
Paul Goldschmidt (Arizona - $4,300) – Paul Goldschmidt has gotten off to a bit of a slow start this season as the first-baseman is hitting just .250, however, Goldschmidt has shown his power this season as he currently has 4 HR’s and 10 RBI’s. Goldschmidt is always a “high cost” target you want to look at when he is at home at Chase Field and I think tonight’s a good night to target him among the other “high-cost” fist-baseman with his matchup against Tyson Ross of San Diego. In his career against Ross, Goldschmidt has posted a .333 average (8-24) with 2 HR’s and a 1.151 OPS. Goldschmidt has picked up 7 walks against Ross which in my eyes, makes me field that he has a good read on what Ross brings to the plate.
Neil Walker (New York Yankees - $2,500) – I’m going to Yankee Stadium for my value pick today at 1B as I’m going to roll with Neil Walker. Marco Estrada pitched well against the Yankees earlier this season with the expectation of Tyler Austin (another option to look at) who hit 2 HR’s against him, however, Estrada is a little banged up coming into this matchup and certainly has the ability to serve up some HR’s. Walker has had success against Estrada in the past as he has a .296 avg (8-27) with 2 HR’s and as all 14 of Walkers HR’s came as a LHB last season, I think he has the ability to put one over the short porch in right.
Whit Merrifield (KC - $3,400) – 2nd game – I’m going with Whit Merrifield of the Royals in their 2nd game of a double-header against Tigers. Merrifield hasn’t had the start of the season that Kansas City was hoping for, as he is currently batting just .250 with a HR and has only stolen one base, however, Merrifield has a terrific matchup tonight against the Detroit Tigers and their LHP Daniel Morris. Merrifield was outstanding against Detroit last year, hitting .359 with 3 HR’s and 3 SB’s in 78 AB’s. Merrifield is also hitting .391 vs. LHP this season and has posted a .444 avg (4-9) and 1.444 OPS against Daniel Norris in his career.
Starlin Castro (Miami - $2700) – 2nd base can be a tough place to try to find a “low-cost” guy and for today’s picks, I’m taking a chance and rolling with Starlin Castro of the Marlins. Castro has a respectable .290 average on the season and although he has yet to hit a HR on the season, the 28-year old certainly has the ability to do so after hitting a combined 37 HR’s over the past two seasons. Castro has been batting right in the heart of the Marlins order and faces the very hittable Jhoulys Chacin, who Castro has a career .300 avg and .783 OPS in 20 AB’s.
Manny Machado (Baltimore - $4,700) – This might be a day to late after Manny’s monster game yesterday (3 for 5, 2B, 2 HR’s 4 RBI’s) however, it’s certainly not impossible for a talented hitter like Machado to put up another good game for us tonight. Machado is hitting .319 on the season and now had 5 HR’s and 14 RBI’s after yesterday’s game. At first, it would seem that a matchup against the talented RHP Trevor Bauer isn’t the ideal matchup, however, Machado has owned Bauer in his career posting a ridiculous .667 avg (8-12) with 3 HR’s and 7 RBI’s.
Alcides Escobar (Milwaukee - $2,600) – 2nd Game – We were able to hit on Orlando Arcia last night who had a solo HR and for my “low-cost” pick as SS tonight I’ll be going back to Kansas City and taking Alcides Escobar. Escobar isn’t really a power threat although he did hit a HR earlier this week, however, I think the matchup in the 2nd game vs. Daniel Norris and the Tigers is a decent one to target tonight. Escobar might be hitting just .182 on the season, but he is 5 for 11 vs. LHP this season for a .455 avg and 1.389 OPS. Similar to Whit Merrifield which I listed above, Escobar has had some success against the LHP Daniel Norris as he has posted a career .500 avg (8-16) avg with a HR and 3 RBI’s.
Rafael Devers (Boston - $3,600) – Rafael Devers is batting in the middle of the hottest hitting and pitching team in baseball and has been swinging a hot bat as of late as their during their recent sweep of the Los Angeles Angels, Davers went 7 for 14 with 2 HR’s and 7 RBI’s. Devers ceratinly had the power to hit some HR’s and he has a strong matchup against Kendall Graveman of the Oakland A’s tonight who has really struggled this season and comes in with a 3.12 HR/9 ratio. Graveman has pitched well against the Red Sox in the past, however, the Red Sox and Devers are just too hot at the plate right now to think that they’ll be able to do it again tonight.
Jeimer Candelario (Detroit - $3,000) – As Bill and I discussed last night on our show…..get Candelario while the price is still this low. This kid can hit the ball as he showed yesterday in his 4-4 performance with a HR yesterday afternoon against Baltimore. Prior to that game, Candelario raised his average to a .284 mark with that performance and currently has 3 HR’s on the season to go along with 4 doubles and 2 triples. Jeimer Candelario does have some experience against the RHP Jason Hammel who he is facing tonight and is 3 for 5 lifetime agianst him.
Aaron Judge (New York Yankees - $5,100) – If you want to spend a lot at one of the OF positions tonight, you can’t go wrong with Aaron Judge tonight. Judge is comes into this game hitting .339 and now has 5 HR’s on the season after hitting one in the Yankee’s victory. Judge is a HR hitting machine and although he’ll strikeout, his approach and patience at the plate has really improved as he almost has as many walks as strikeouts so far this season. Judge has a great matchup against Marco Estrada who certainly is capable of giving up HR’s. In his career against Estrada, Judge is batting an impressive .412 (7-17) with 2 HR’s and 5 RBI’s.
Tommy Pham (St. Louis - $4,400) – Tommy Pham really came into his own during the 2nd half of the season last year and I think Pham is a good option to spend up on tonight as he will be going against the LHP Brandon Finnegan of the Reds. Pham is currently hitting .323 on the season has done it with both his bat and legs this season as he currently has 2 HR’s and 5 SB’s. Pham is hitting .462 against LHP and is 5 for 10 against the LHP Finnegan in his career. You’ll have to make sure Pham is playing as he has been bothered by a groin injury as of late, however, as Pham pinched hit in yesterday’s game, I imagine he’ll be a go tonight.
Jackie Bradley Jr. (Boston- $2,900) – I’m going to stick w/ Jackie Bradley as I did yesterday, although he did get the night off. As I mentioned yesterday, JBJ is one of more streaky hitters in baseball as when he has it going he can really go on a tear however, when he is off….it can ugly real quick. Bradley Jr. had a nice series against LAA in the two-games he played in going 4-10 with a bomb of a HR. Bradley Jr. hasn’t had much success in limited action against Kendall Graveman of the A’s however, it is a LHB vs. RHP matchup and with how the Red Sox are swinging the bats, Bradley Jr. should get some nice opportunities to drive in some runs tonight.
Eddie Rosario (Minnesota- $3,000) – Eddie Rosario has gotten off to a bit of a slow start this season as he is hitting just .224, however, Rosario showed last year with his 27 HR’s that he has the ability to provide some big nights in the daily fantasy world. Rosario is facing off against Chris Archer of the Rays and I think many people can overlook that a LHB vs. Archer is a great matchup to try and exploit. Archer does rack up K’s with that great slider against RHB’s, however, he struggled against LHB’s and currently this season is allowing LHB’s to hit .450 against him. Rosario is 3 for 9 with two 2B’s against Archer in his career.
Other: Josh Reddick is someone to look at if James Shields gets the start tonight for CWS, although it doesn’t like it after Shields had to come in relief in Chicago’s 14 inning loss to Oakland on Wednesday. Also liked Jose Pirela (SD) as the Padres have a nice matchup against Matt Koch of the Diamondbacks who is now starting, replacing Taijuan Walker who out for the season.
