Please Note – This article was written prior to the completion of yesterday’s games so all player statistics are as of 4/19.
Carlos Martinez (St. Louis - $9,800) – Carlos Martinez is going to be my “high-cost” pitcher of the day as he gets great matchup against the struggling Cincinnati Reds in which he just recently dominated for 64 FanDuel points this past Sunday. Martinez has sporting a nice 1.75 ERA and 1.17 WHIP early in the season and has gotten 3 quality starts in 4 starts this season. As with all pitchers we want to target in DFS, Martinez has a great K/9 rate of 10.52 and faces a Reds team that ranks 29th in MLB in strikeout rate at 10.4 strikeouts per game.
Blake Snell (Tampa Bay - $8,100) – There is no real super cheap option on the mound today, however, I do think Blake Snell who is reasonably priced, is a good way to go if you want to save a little bit of your salary for some hitters. Snell is one of the better pitchers for Tampa Bay and has a very solid four pitch arsenal at his disposal which has been given hitters fits so far this season. Snell has an impressive 2.95 ERA and 10.97 K/9 rate early in the season. Snell has been outstanding in his last two outings giving up just 2 ER over 12 IP while striking out 19 batters and with a decent matchup with a Minnesota team that ranks 26th in strikeout rate, I can see Snell having a big day at Tropicana Field.
Edwin Encarnacion (Cleveland - $3,800) – There are some decent options at the C/1B position today, however, I’m taking Edwin Encarnacion tonight as although it’s been a tough early go for the slugger, he has one of the best matchups on the slate in the struggling Chris Tillman who is probably lucky is still pitching at the MLB level. Encarnacion is hitting just .153 on the season, however, still has 4 HR’s on the year which all have been on the road. Tillman comes into this game with 11.91 ERA so far this season and as Encarnacion has hit .300 (18-60) with 4 HR’s against the right-hander in his career, I just have a feeling that him and the rest of the Indians are in for a big game on Saturday.
If you want to spend a little less on a “higher cost” guy, look at Yadier Molina who had 3 HR’s and a .405 avg in 42 AB’s against Homer Bailey.
Victor Martinez (Detroit - $2,500) – Victor Martinez might be getting up there in age and doesn’t have much home-run power any more, however, the switching hitting catcher has had a nice season to date, hitting .314 with 5 doubles and a HR. Martinez hasn’t had much success as RHB this season, however, he will be facing Danny Duffy, coming off short rest, who has a .385 average (15-39) with 3 HR’s and 6 RBI’s against. Duffy struggled against Detroit last season posting a 5.17 ERA in 15.2 IP and as I like Martinez batting in the heart of the order, I think he is good option for a low price.
Robinson Cano (Seattle - $3,800) – Look it….I love rooting for Bartolo Colon. Watching his performance against Houston has been one of the highlights of the season to date. At the same time, I just can’t see Bartolo being able to repeat that performance and I’m looking to take advantage of it by selecting Robinson Cano. Cano picked up his 1st HR of the season earlier this week and has been great at plate this season as he is hitting .339 and has .935 OPS. Cano is 7 for 18 with a HR against Cano in his career and as Colon allowed LHBs to hit .313 against him last season, Cano is a great “high cost” option tonight.
Jason Kipnis (Cleveland - $2900) – This is not the first Cleveland Indian I’ve selected tonight, and it certainly won’t be the last as I fully plan on rostering a few Cleveland stacks tonight against Chris Tillman. Kipnis, like many of the Cleveland hitters, haven’t had a great start to his season as he comes into this matchup hitting just .167, however, the veteran 2nd baseman has played better as of late as prior to last nights game, he has a 5-game hitting streak with 3 doubles. I really like Kipnis largely do his ability to hit HR’s and steal an occasional bag and the fact that Tillman is allowing LHB’s to hit .550 against him on the season.
Francisco Lindor (Cleveland - $4,400) – Staying in Cleveland, my “high-cost” shortstop today will be the switch-hitting Francisco Lindor. Lindor is hitting just .217 on the season but it’s only a matter of time into the outstanding shortstop starts getting his numbers up and I don’t see a better time than tomorrow night against Chris Tillman. Lindor is a great DFS player with his ability to do damage with the long ball but also with his legs as he already has 3 SB’s on the year. Lindor, along with many of his teammates that have and still will be mentioned, should be in for a big day in Baltimore tomorrow.
Nick Ahmed (Arizona - $2,800) – As it usually is at this position, trying to find a low-cost value at shortstop is a tough task as once you get down to this level, it’s hard to find players that have HR potential or even a decent average to get a multi-hit game. I decided to go with Nick Ahmed as although he has been real cold as of late, Ahmed has showed some of his pop earlier the season and does have 2 HR’s and 9 RBI’s this season although he is hitting just .212. Ahmed has a nice matchup against the LHP Clayton Richard who has been hit hard early in the season allowing RHB to hit .281 against him and Ahmed showed us last season that he generally like the LHP matchup as he hit .396 against LHP last season with an impressive 1.078 OPS.
Jose Ramirez (Cleveland - $4,300) – If you made it down to this part of the artcle, I think it’s pretty clear that I’m targeting the Indians hitters tomorrow against Chris Tillman. Jose Ramirez got off to a very slow start this season, however, although he is hitting just .197 on the year, he still been able to hit 4 HR’s and also stolen 2 bases. Ramirez has been picking it up as of late as going into last night’s game, Ramirez was riding a 7-game hitting streak which included a .333 average over his past 3 games. This is the last Cleveland hitter I’m going to write about today, but remember……there are facing Chris Tillman who is allowing hitters has given up 15 ER in just 11.3 IP while allowing hitters to bat .423 against him on the year.
Adrian Beltre (Texas- $3,300) – Beltre isn’t the cheapest option at 3B today, however, I like the value that Beltre brings to the table today as he comes into this game with a .300 average with a HR and 5 RBI’s. Beltre is facing James Paxton of the Seattle Mariners who he has had a lot of success against in his career as he has posted a .562 avg (9-16) and an incredible 1.432 OPS against the left-hander. Beltre is hitting .324 at home this season and as we all know, once the weather starts warming up, so does Beltre.
Mookie Betts (Boston Red Sox - $5,100) – Mookie, Mookie, Mookie!!!!! The do it all right fielder for the Red Sox has been on a tear as of late and absolutely destroyed Mike Trout and the Angels in their recent series sweep as Betts was 7 for 13 with 4 HR’s and 4 RBI’s. Betts is establishing himself as an early MVP contender this season with his overall solid play and comes into this game hitting .391 with 6 HR’s and 14 RBIs. Betts is going against the left-handed Sean Manaea tonight, and although Manaea has been solid so far this season, Betts is 4 for 8 with 2 HR’s and 5 RBI’s against him in his career.
Aaron Judge (New York Yankees- $5,400) – This is another really high cost, so obviously it will be tough to be able to afford both Betts and Judge, however, I really like the matchups that top-tier guys have on today’s slate. Judge with a bit of a disappointment last night against Estrada, however, has another great matchup today against the RHP Marcus Stroman who comes into this game with a 7.98 ERA. Judge is hitting .339 on the season with 5 HR’s and I like him again today as he is 6 for 14 against Stroman in his career with 3 HR’s and a 1.571 OPS.
Also Considered: A.J. Pollock (Arizona - $3,900) - Pollock is a lesser version of a Charlie Blackmon who had power and can steal bases. He is day-to-day with a hand injury suffered on Thursday, but he plays, he is at nice price against the LHP Clayton Richard.
Wil Myers (San Diego - $3,100) – Wil Myers returned from injury last night and had a nice game going 2 for 4 with a run scored. Myers has played only in a handful of games this season but did have a HR earlier in the season and is one of the best, if not the best, offensive weapons on the Padres. Myers price is low compared to the damage he can do with the bat and as he has posted a .467 avg (7-15) with a HR against Zack Godley in his career, I think Myers is a great option today at $3,100.
Avisail Garcia (Chicago White Sox- $3,000) – Avisail Garcia should warrant a good look tonight as although Garcia has struggled this season and has a tough matchup tonight, I feel Garcia is priced a bit too low for the potential he brings to the plate. Garcia is hitting just .222 with a HR on the season, but 26-year old showed us last season he is a solid hitter as he posted a .330 avg on the season while hitting an incredible .424 against LHP’s. Garcia has power to hit home runs and although he does face Dallas Keuchel tonight, he has posted a .412 avg with a HR in his career against the left-hander.
