Please Note – This article was written prior to the completion of yesterday’s games so all player statistics are as of 5/11.
Luis Severino (New York Yankees - $10,400) – Luis Severino is coming of back to back game with 10+ strikeouts and I’m hoping to ride this momentum with his solid matchup against the Oakland Athletics on Sunday afternoon. Severino comes into this game with a 5-1 record with a 2.21 ERA and 0.87 WHIP. Severino slider is one of the best in baseball and has helped him get an impressive 10.7 K/9 ratio. Severino is holding both LHB and RHB’s to under .200 averages on the season and as Oakland ranks 21st in strikeout rate, paying up for Severino is worth it on Sunday.
Jon Gray (Colorado Rockies - TBD) – There are a lot of great hitting matchups on Sunday so trying to find value you at the pitching position will be necessary if you want to exploit some of this matchups. There are a few good names (Blake Snell, Sean Newcomb) out there but if you want some real value, I would check out Jon Gray of the Colorado Rockies. Gray had a tough start to his season, however, has pitched well as of late as over his last three starts, in which two of them have been at Coors Field, he is 3-0 while giving up just 1 ER while striking out a combined 25 batters. Gray has pitched well against the Brewers in the past and has he strikeout upside with his 9.45 K/9 ratio and the wind will be blowing in at Coors Field, Gray has some nice value on Sunday.
Freddie Freeman (Atlanta Braves - $4,500) – Freddie Freeman might be not getting as much attention with Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuna tearing up the National League, however, Freeman still is one of the best first-baseman in MLB and currently is hitting .319 on the season with 6 HR’s and 28 RBI’s. Freeman is hitting .318 over the past week and has been even better on the road as is hitting .337 away from SunTrust Park on the season. Freeman is up against Jose Urena of the Miami Marlins who is allowing LHB’s to hit .287 on the season and as Freeman is 5 for 12 (.417 average/1.450 OPS) with a HR against Urena in his career, Freeman is worth paying up for on Sunday.
Yuli Gurriel (Houston Astros - $3,200) – Yuli Gurriel hasn’t produced the power numbers so far this season as he is hitting just .273 on the season with just 1 HR and 13 RBI’s, however, Gurriel and the other Houston Astros should be looked at on Sunday as they have one of the best matchups on the slate going against the LHP Matt Moore of the Texas Rangers. Moore comes into this game with a 7.71 ERA, 1.91 WHIP and has given up a combined 15 ER’s in his last two games. Moore is allowing opponents to hit .326 against him on the season and as Gurriel price has dropped due to his recent struggles, he has some great value in this matchup.
DJ LeMahieu – (Colorado Rockies -$TBD) – I’m going with DJ LeMahieu as my “high-cost” option at 2B today as he had a nice matchup agianst the LHP Brent Suter of the Milwaukee Brewers at Coors Field. LeMahieu comes into this game with a .292 average with 5 HR’s and 13 RBI’s and has been great against LHP’s on the season as he posted a .317 average, .634 slugging %, and a 1.038 OPS agianst them. Suter has struggled on the season as he has a 5.34 ERA and is allowing RHB’s to hit .299 against him on the season. LeMahieu is career .300 hitter and is worth the money on Sunday as he has a career .346 average at Coors Field over his past three seasons.
Eduardo Nunez – (Boston Red Sox -$2,900) – Eduardo Nunez is hitting just .239 on the season with 3 HR’s and 10 RBI’s and although he has been somewhat disappointing, he comes in with a great matchup against the RHP Joe Biagini of the Toronto Blue Jays. Biagini currently has an 8.10 ERA over his two starts this season and is allowing opponents to average .348 against him on the season. Nunez currently is on a 5-game hitting streak and is hitting RHB’s much better this season as he has posted a .271 average against them. The Red Sox could put up a lot of runs in this one and I certainly like Nunez in the middle of the lineup for under $3,000.
Carlos Correa - (Houston Astros - $4,100) – Carlos Correa has struggled as of late as he has hit just .167 over the past week, however, he should be one of the better “high-cost” options on Sunday with his matchup against Matt Moore of the Rangers. Correa is hitting .292 on the season with 5 HR’s and 25 RBI’s and has more HR’s against the Rangers than any other team in his career. Moore has given up 4 HR’s over his past two games and as Correa has a .333 average and .916 OPS against LHP’s this season, stacking the Astros on Sunday will be a solid play.
Paul DeJong (St. Louis Cardinals - $TBD) – Paul DeJong isn’t the most “low-cost” option but with his price in the mid-$3,000 range, I think he has some great value agianst the LHP Clayton Richard of the Padres on Sunday. DeJong is hitting just .263 on the season but has some nice power as he has 8 HR’s and 18 RBI’s on the season. DeJong is 4 for 9 with a HR and 4 RBI’s in the first two games of the Padres series and is hitting .304 over the week. Richard has a 5.72 ERA on the season and as he is allowing RHB’s to hit .295 against him this year, DeJong has a ton of value on Sunday.
Mike Moustakas (Kansas City Royals - $3,400) – I know….Moustakas is going up against Corey Kluber of the Indians but at least hear me out on this one. Moustakas has had a great season as he is currently hitting .301 on the season with 10 HR’s and 29 RBI’s and has been crushing RHP this season as he currently has a .333 average and 1.073 OPS against them. Kluber is one, if not the best, pitchers in MLB however, he has always struggled agianst the Royals 3B as Moustakas is 18 for 39 (.462) average with a 1.218 OPS agianst him. Moustakas is hitting .320 with 2 HR’s and 9 RBI’s over the past week and if I want to pay up at 3B, I’m not afraid to take Moustakas even with the tough matchup.
Evan Longoria (San Francisco Giants - $2,800) – Evan Longoria is not hitting for a high average in his first season with the Giants however, the veteran third-baseman still has shown some power with 7 HR’s and 20 RBI’s on the year. Longoria has hits in 3 of his last 4 games and has a nice matchup agianst Ivan Nova who hasn’t lasted past 5 innings in his last two starts and has given up 10 ER’s and 3 HR’s in that span. Longoria has a .317 average (13-41) with 3 HR’s against Nova in his career and I think he’ll have success agianst Nova again who is allowing opponents to hit .284 against him on the season.
Andrew Benintendi/Mookie Betts/J.D. Martinez (Boston Red Sox -$3,600/$4,500/$4,900) – Basically, I like any of the Red Sox OF’s in their matchup agianst Joe Biagini of the Blue Jays. Benintendi has hits in 5 of his last 6 games and has shown off as his power agianst RHP’s on the season as he has a .822 OPS against them. Betts has been one of the best players in MLB as he is hitting .346 with 13 HR’s and is 6 for 11 with 2 HR’s against Biagini in his career. Martinez is hitting .343 on the season with 9 HR’s and currently has a 12-game hitting streak. Basically, any Red Sox outfielder, I like on Sunday’s with their matchup against Biagini.
Giancarlo Stanton/Aaron Judge (New York Yankees - $4,800/$5,200) – Similar to the Red Sox, the Yankees OF have a nice matchup against the LHP Brett Anderson of the Oakland Athletics who recently last just 3 innings, giving up 7 ER’s against the Astros this past Monday. Stanton has 9 HR’s on the season and although is hitting just .235 on the season, he has crushed LHP’s on the season to the tune of a .406 average and 1.538 OPS. Judge is heating up as he is hitting .333 over the past week and currently has 11 HR’s and 34 RBI’s on the season. Judge is hitting .346 at home and I expect that Stanton and Judge will have nice days on Sunday.
Tommy Pham (St. Louis Cardinals - $TBD) – Tommy Pham is hitting .343 on the season with 7 HR’s and 17 RBI’s and has been great since returning from his injury as over his last two games, he is 5 for 9 with 2 HR’s and 3 RBI’s. Pham is hitting .400 on the season against LHP on the season and has a nice matchup against the LHP Clayton Richard of the Padres on Sunday. Pham is hitting .369 on the road this season and as he Pham can also steal some bases as he has 7 on the season, he is generally safe “high-cost” play going up against an LHP.
Marcell Ozuna (St. Louis Cardinals - $TBD) – I’m staying with the Cardinals and going with Marcell Ozuna as his price tag still qualifies as a “low-cost” option. Ozuna is hitting just .261 on the season with 3 HR’s on the year, however, has picked it up as of late as he is currently 4 for 8 with a HR in the first two games of the Cardinals series agianst San Diego. Ozuna is hitting .323 agianst LHP on the season and as he has a .308 average and .869 OPS against LHP over his past three seasons, Ozuna is a great value play against Clayton Richard.
Jackie Bradley Jr. (Boston Red Sox - $2,200) – As I said above, I like all the Red Sox OF’s on Sunday and that even includes Jackie Bradley Jr. who is hitting .173 on the season. Bradley Jr. has struggled so much that the Red Sox’s must start considering what they will do with Bradley Jr. if his bat doesn’t turn around, however, Bradley Jr. is a steaky hitter who had HR power and is a good value pick on Sunday agianst Joe Biagini. Jackie Bradley Jr. has a career .333 (3 for 9) average with a HR against the RHP in his career and as he has hit much better agianst RHP, he is worth a shot on Sunday for price.
