Update (6:16 PM) - Hi Everyone! We are replacing out "punt" play in Sandy Leon with Elias Diaz of the Pirates! Image is updated below! Good Luck!
We were all over some solid value at the pitching position last night as we had Kyle Hendricks (31.15 points) and Eduardo Rodriguez (23.15), however, as our offense outside of Steve Pearce (19 points) and J.D. Martinez (23 points) didn’t do much, we just missed out in our 50/50’s. Let’s get our first win of the week tonight as we look at tonight’s “main slate” that starts at 7:05 PM.
For our pitchers tonight, I’m going to be looking at the Dodgers Rich Hill (P) in his solid match-up against the Padres and be taking a chance with the Phillies Enyel De Los Santos (P) who will be making his MLB debut against the Mets. Hill looks like he will be good to go tonight after leaving his last start early due to neck tightness after sliding head first into home in his last start (what is a pitching like Hill doing sliding head first!!!!). Hill has looked good since returning from the DL that saw him missed a month of action and over his last two starts, he has gone 11.2 IP, giving up just 3 ER’s while striking out 15 and could be in for a big strikeout night against the Padres who rank 28th in team strikeout rate. De Los Santos has been one of the best pitchers in Triple-A this season as he has posted a 1.89 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over 16 starts this season. He has a respectable 8.2 K/9 ratio and has a 42.1% ground-ball rate which helps him keep the ball in the park. The match-up is great for De Los Santos as the Mets rank just 28th in MLB in batting average vs. RHP (.232) and they rank 18th in team strikeout rate. The Mets have scored just 5 runs in their last 4 games and I just think the value here is too much to pass up on tonight even though I do like Verlander against Oakland tonight.
I’m going right back to Fenway Park as the Red Sox have a great match-up against the RHP Yovani Gallardo of the Texas Rangers to lead off our offense tonight. Gallardo comes into this game with an 8.17 ERA and 1.70 WHIP and as given up at least 3 ER’s in each of his last 4 starts. Gallardo has a 1.8 HR/9 ratio on the season and is allowing opponents to hit .365 against him when he is on the road this season. For the Red Sox, we’re going to be going with Mitch Moreland (C/1B), J.D. Martinez (OF) and Andrew Benintendi (OF), and Sandy Leon (C). Moreland is hitting just .250 over the past week, however, has had a nice season, hitting .283 with 11 HR’s and 43 RBI’s. Moreland had been a thorn in the side of his former club as since joining the Red Sox in 2017, he has posted a .464 (13/28) average against the Rangers. J.D. “just dingers” Martinez continues he incredible season last night for the Red Sox as he had his 5th straight 2-hit game and blasted his 28th HR of the season. Martinez is hitting .435 over the past week and has a .333 career average against Gallardo. Benintendi is hitting an incredible .550 (11-20) over the past week and has posted a .319 average and .951 OPS vs. RHP on the season. Leon will be seeing playing time more on a regular basis with Christian Vazquez out for the foreseeable future and has been decent as of late, picking up hits in 3 of his last 4 games. Leon has some pop in his bat and is hitting .375 with a HR against Texas on the season.
We’re going to grab a couple of Cleveland Indians tonight as we’ll be paying up for Francisco Lindor (SS) and will hope for value with Tyler Naquin (OF) in their solid match-up against the Reds Sal Romano who comes into this game with a .540 ERA and is allowing LHB’s to post a .303 average and .898 OPS against him on the season. Lindor is hitting .326 at Progressive Field this season and has 18 of his 23 HR’s as an LHB. Lindor is hitting .375 so far in the month of July and has posted a .412 average vs. the Reds in his last three seasons. Naquin has posted a .259 average with 2 HR’s and 16 RBI’s in limited AB’s this season but has been much better against RHP and is hitting .282 at home this season. Naquin does have HR-upside as he has 14 HR’s last season and could get a round tripper tonight as Romano has a 1.61 HR/9 ratio on the season.
Rounding out the team with be a couple of “punt” plays in the Cardinals Kolten Wong (2B) and the Angels Luis Valbuena (3B). The LHB Wong has been on fire as of late as over the past week he has hit .467 and has a great match-up against Dylan Covey of the White Sox who has given up 22 ER’s and 6 HR’s over his last four starts. Wong has a .716 OPS vs. RHP on the season and is hitting .364 so far in the month of July. Valbuena is a solid “punt” play tonight as he comes in with a solid match-up against Seattle Mike Leake. Leake has been solid this season but he certainly is hittable and didn’t look that great against the Angels in his last start (4.0 IP, 9 H, 3 ER). Valbuena has HR-upside as he had 9 HR’s on the season and has always hit Leake well as in his career, Valbuena has a .429 average and 1.020 OPS against the right-hander in 28 AB’s.
Please check back later as I’ll update the lineup with any necessary changes due to “confirmed lineups” and/or weather.
