DFS – Fantasy Baseball – MLB DraftKings Lineup, Picks & Advice – 8/2/18
Update (5:55 PM) - I'm not making any changes to the original lineup so we should be good to go. There is a little weather to be worried about in both our WAS & PHI games (which is the majority of our team), however, the forecasts aren't bad enough for me to change at this point. Good Luck!
It was a low scoring night overall, however, our 85.1-point performance wasn’t near good enough to cash in either the 50/50’s or GPP’s last night. We paid up for the top-2 pitchers on the slate and they disappointed as between Kyle Freeland and Rich Hill, we only got a combined 24.1 points between the two. We got some solid offensive contributions from Yoan Moncada (23 points), Francisco Cervelli (13 points) and Jose Abreu (11 points), however, the rest of the offense disappointed us as Charlie Blackmon, Manny Machado, and Carlos Gonzalez combined for just 9 points. Let’s try to get back on track today as we take a look at the 9-game main slate that starts at 7:05 pm tonight!
On the mound tonight, we’re going to be going with the Phillies Nick Pivetta (P) and the Mariners Felix Hernandez (P). Pivetta comes into this game with a 4.85 ERA and 1.33 WHIP and although he has struggled a bit as of late, he still has a ton of DFS value tonight with his matchup against the Miami Marlins. Pivetta has an impressive 11.2 K/9 rate and has been striking people out in bunches as of late, as he has recorded 28 K’s in his last 18 IP. Pivetta has pitched much better at home this season (4.26 ERA) and faces a Miami team that ranks 26th in MLB in terms of OPS vs. RHP. Pivetta has struggled a bit against LHB’s this season, however, as this Miami lineup doesn’t scare me much and for the fact the Marlins are below the league average in strikeout rate (8.58 K/game), I think Pivetta has some nice value tonight. It’s no secret that King Felix has really struggled this season as he comes into this matchup with a 5.58 ERA and 1.41 WHIP, however, as I’m looking for a low-cost option for my second pitcher today, I think we could do much work as he still has some upside to throw a solid game. I like Hernandez tonight as he actually has been much better at home this season, posting a 4.06 ERA while holding opponents to a .245 average and he will be up against the Blue Jays who rank 22nd in MLB in terms of batting average on the road (.235). Hernandez still has a respectable 7.6 K/9 ratio and always seems to pitch well against the Blue Jays as over his last three seasons, he has a 0.86 ERA over 3 starts (21.0 IP) against Toronto.
If you follow baseball, you know about the Nationals incredible 25-run performance against the Mets earlier this week, and although it’s obvious that a performance like that won’t happen again anytime soon, you have the love the Nationals matchup against the RHP Tyler Mahle of the Reds with the wind blowing out at Nationals Park tonight. Mahle comes into this game with a respectable 4.53 ERA, however, he has a subpar WHIP of 1.52 and has given up 14 ER’s in his last 9 IP. Mahle has been killed by the HR ball as he has a 1.8 HR/9 ratio and is allowing LHB’s to have a .580 slugging percentage and .985 OPS against him. For the Nationals, we’re going to be stacking Matt Adams (C/1B), Daniel Murphy (2B), Trea Turner (SS), and Bryce Harper (OF). Adams is having a solid season with the Nationals, hitting .282 on the season with 17 HR’s and 46 RBI’s. Adams is going to lose some time now that Zimmerman is back, however, he should be in the lineup tonight against the RHP as he has posted a .945 OPS vs. righties on the season. Murphy is starting to pick it up for the Nationals as he now is hitting .288 on the season with 4 HR’s and 23 RBI’s. Murphy is hitting .500 (9 for 18) over the past week and has a .321 average at home this season. Trea Turner has also been on a tear as he is hitting .400 over the past week, with 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, and 6 SB’s! Turner has HR pop as he as 13 round-trippers on the season, which 11 of them have come against RHP. I’m expecting a strong finished from Harper this season and it looks like he is rounding back to form as he is hitting .400 (8 for 20) over the past week. Harper is hitting much better at home this season (.250 average) and has 19 HR’s vs. RHP on the season.
We have a couple of Atlanta Braves tonight in Tyler Fowlers (C) and Ronald Acuna Jr (OF) as they have one of the better matchups of the night against the LHP Jason Vargas of the New York Mets. Vargas comes into this game with an 8.36 ERA and 1.79 WHIP in 10 starts this season and has given up a bunch of HR’s as he currently has a 2.6 HR/9 ratio. Vargas has really struggled against RHB on the season as he is allowing them to post a .338 average/.608 slugging percentage/.999 OPS against him. Flowers has been in an equal time split with Kurt Suzuki behind the plate for the Braves this season, however, I expect him to be starting tonight as he has a .421 average and 1.291 OPS in 38 AB’s vs. LHP on the season. Acuna Jr. is one of the top young players in MLB and although he is hitting just .264 on the season, he does have 11 HR’s and 27 RBI’s in his 53 games played this season. Acuna Jr. is coming off a nice two games series against Miami in which he went 4 for 9 with 2 HR’s and 3 RBI’s and I think he can continue this hot streak against Vargas tonight.
To complete our infield tonight, we’re going to be going with Christian Villanueva (3B) who will be up against the LHP Mike Montgomery of the Chicago Cubs. Montgomery has been solid for the Cubs, posting a 4.03 ERA and 1.34 WHIP, however, is coming off one of his worst starts of the season last Friday against the Cardinals as he gave up 12 hits and 5 ER’s in just 5 IP. Villanueva has struggled with the batting average his rookie season as he is hitting just .219 on the year, however, there is no denying the power he brings to the late as he has 19 HR’s on the season. We like Villanueva tonight as he has great splits against LHP, as on the year, he has posted a .313 average/1.091 OPS with 13 HR’s in 96 AB’s.
Rounding out the team tonight will be Nick Williams (OF) of the Philadelphia Phillies as as he has a nice matchup against the RHP Pablo Lopez of the Marlins. Lopez has made 5 starts for the Marlins so far this season and although he has shown some flashes here and there, the overall production has been unspectacular as he comes into this game with a 5.34 ERA and 1.29 WHIP while allowing LHB’s to post a .824 OPS against him. Williams has earned an every-day role with the Phillies as although he is hitting just .257 on the season, he has shown great power as he has 14 HR’s and 39 RBI’s on the season. Williams has been one of the hotter hitters for the Phillies as of late as he has hit .350 with 2 HR’s over the past week and is coming hitting .311 in the month of July.
Please check back later as I’ll make any necessary updates due to “confirmed lineups” and/or weather.
