MLB - Fantasy Baseball - MLB DraftKings Lineup, Picks & Advice - 8/9/18

Hi Everyone! Similar to FanDuel, we continued our recent hot streak on DraftKings last night as our 130.55-point performance allowed us to cash in both our 50/50’s and GPP’s. We plugged in Brett Phillips last night, which didn’t go well as he got us negative points, however, it ended up being the right move as we went against Jose Quintana who had a rough night and was able to pay up for some bigger bats which included Francisco Lindor who had a 25-point night. Also contributing for the lineup last night was Rafael Devers (25 points), J.D. Martinez (17 points), Gleyber Torres (14 points), Mookie Betts (14 points), and Mitch Moreland (11 points). Let’s take a look at tonight’s “featured” slate that starts at 7:05 pm and features 6 games.

On the mound tonight, we’re going to be going with the Yankees J.A. Happ (P) and taking a chance with the very affordable Ian Nova (P). Happ, who coming off the DL after a minor illness which saw him miss two starts, is coming off a solid debut with the Yankees (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER) and I like his matchup against the Rangers as he is holding the current roster to just a .176 average (13-74). Happ uses a high fastball to generate strikeouts and has put up an impressive 9.9 K/9 ratio on the season. Happ should be able to generate some strikeouts tonight as he faces a Rangers team that ranks 28th in team strikeout rate (9.49 K/Game). Happ is holding his opponents to just a .225 average on the season and as I’m not concerned about a pitch limitation, I think he is a solid mid-tier option tonight. Ian Nova hasn’t been anything outstanding this season, however, he hasn’t been that bad either as he comes into this game with a 4.49 ERA and 1.34 WHIP.  Nova has held his opponents to 3 ER’s or less in 4 of his last 5 starts and is backed by a solid offense that has been playing well in the 2nd half of the season. Nova has just a 6.5 K/9 ratio, however, the Giants haven’t been outstanding this season in terms of the strikeouts as they rank 23rd in team strikeout rate. There is obviously some risk with Nova but as long as he can limit the damage done by the Giants LHB’s, he certainly has ability to hit value with a sub $5,000 price tag.

We’re going to be focusing on three offenses tonight, as the Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox, and New York Yankees all have nice matchups tonight.

Tampa Bay has a solid matchup against the RHP David Hess of the Baltimore Orioles. It’s been struggle for Hess this season as he comes into this game with a 6.41 ERA and 1.54 WHIP while giving up at least 5 ER’s in his last 5 starts (26 ER’s in 21 IP). Hess is allowing his opponents to post a .284 average on the season and has had trouble with HR’s as he currently has a 2.2 HR/9 ratio. For the Rays, we’re going to go with Matt Duffy (3B) and Jake Bauers (OF). Duffy is having a solid year for the Rays as he is hitting .301 on the season with 4 HR’s and 31 RBI’s and has been great at home, hitting .314. Duffy has a .301 average vs. RHP and is 2 for 6 with a HR vs. Hess in his career. Bauers is one of the better prospects in the Rays organization and has shown his potential already as although he is hitting just .237 on the season, he does have 9 HR’s and 30 RBI’s since being called up at the beginning of June. Bauers has a .839 OPS vs. RHB’s and has posted a solid .833 OPS at home this season.

We have a mini stack of Red Sox’s in the lineup in Steve Pearce (C/1B), Xander Bogaerts, and Mookie Betts as they go up against the LHP Ryan Borucki of the Toronto Blue Jays. Borucki has pitched well for the Blue Jays this season but struggled in his one start against the Red Sox as he lasted just 3.0 innings while giving up 4 ER’s on 8 hits & 4 BB’s. Pearce has been outstanding since joining the Red Sox as in his 20 games for his new ball club, he has posted a .333 average/1.097 OPS with 5 HR’s. Pearce is an LHP hitting specialist as on the season he has posted a .353 average/1.068 OPS. Bogaerts has been nothing more than average as of late, but he is having a nice season as he has posted a .274 average with 16 HR’s and 68 RBI’s. Bogaerts will be hitting right in the middle of the powerful Red Sox lineup and has been solid against the Blue Jays this season, posting a .928 OPS. Betts continues to be one of the best in baseball this season as he is hitting .340 on the season with 26 HR’s and 58 RBI’s to go along with 22 SB’s. Betts is hitting .375 over the past week and is 2 for 2 lifetime with 2 triples against Borucki in his career.

Rounding out the team, we’re going to be going with the Yankees Austin Romine (C), Gleyber Torres (2B) and Giancarlo Stanton (OF) as they will be up against the Rangers RHP Ariel Jurado. Jurado has been surprisingly effective for the Rangers in his last two starts (11.0 IP, 8 H, 3ER) however, I’m just not buying it as this a pitcher that has less than average stuff and doesn’t have the ability to make hitters swing in miss. The catcher position is not great tonight as the top-tier catchers all have difficult matchups, so I’m going to be going whatever Yankees catcher is starting which currently looks like Romine. Romine is hitting .256 on the season with 6 HR’s and 30 RBI’s and has been solid at home, hitting at a .284 average. Torres has had an outstanding rookie season as he comes into this matchup with 18 HR’s and 52 RBI’s on the season. Torres is hitting .307 at home this season and has been solid against RHP as he posted a .837 OPS with 13 of his 18 HR’s. Stanton had a very noticeable slow start for the Yankees, however, has turned it around and is having a solid season, posting a .279 average with 27 HR’s and 73 RBI’s. Stanton has been on a hot streak as of late, hitting .310 with 3 HR’s and 9 RBI’s over the past week, and as he is capable of stringing some solid games together, I’m not going against him against a guy his going to make contact against.

Please check back later as I’ll make any necessary updates to the lineup due to “confirmed lineups” and/or weather.

Good Luck.
