Hi Everyone! Happy Labor Day!
Obviously, yesterday’s lineup was a complete disaster as we stacked the Red Sox, including their pitcher, and we all know how well that went in their 8-0 loss. The rest of our lineup struggled also as we didn’t have one player that reached double-digits and was led by Scooter Gennett (9.5 points), Scoot Schebler (9 points), and Matt Carpenter (9 points). Let’s get back on track as we look at tonight’s “Main” slate that starts at 7:05pm.
On the mound, we’re paying up for Jason deGrom (P) in his match-up agianst the Los Angeles Dodgers. deGrom has been outstanding on the mound this season, posting an incredible 1.68 ERA and 0.98 WHIP. deGrom has been lights out as of late, as over his past 5 games he has given up just 4 ER’s while striking out 51 hitters over 35.2 IP. DeGrom is holding his opponents to just a .208 average (.174 vs. RHB; .239 vs. LHB) and has a career best K/9 ratio of 11.1. deGrom is averaging 57.2 FanDuel points over his last 5 starts and there is no reason we can’t expect him to have another quality start today.
We’re going to be stacking the Tampa Bay Rays today in Joey Wendle (2B), Willy Adames (SS), and Brandon Lowe (OF) in their match-up against the RHP Marcus Stroman of the Toronto Blue Jays. Stroman comes into this game with a 5.27 ERA and 1.44 WHIP on the season and is coming off the DL today due to a blister issue. It’s been a tough season for Stroman as between injuries and just not pitching well, I think the Blue Jays RHP is just ready to move on to next season. Stroman is allowing the current Rays roster to hit .297 against him on the season and currently has just a 6.8 K/9 ratio on the season. Wendle comes into this game with a .298 average on the season with 7 HR’s and 49 RBI’s and has been outstanding as of late, hitting .391 over the past week. Wendle has a .323 average with 5 of his 7 HR’s on the road this season and has a .301 average/.783 OPS vs. RHP on the year. Adames is hitting just .258 on the season however, has had shown some decent power with his 8 HR’s over his first 62 games played. Adames is hitting .333 over the past week and has crushed Toronto this season to the tune of a .476 (10-21) average. Brandon Lowe took some time to get adjusted to the majors, however, he has figured it out as the rookie is hitting an incredible .462 with 3 HR’s over the past week. Lowe has been better on the road this season and has a .520 slugging percentage/.910 OPS vs. RHP on the year.
We like the match-up that the Arizona Diamondbacks have against the LHP Bryan Mitchell tonight and we’re going to get some of their bigger bats in our lineup with Paul Goldschmidt (C/1B) and Steven Souza Jr. (OF). Mitchell comes into this game with a 7.08 ERA on the season and 2.03 WHIP and recently last just 2.2 IP against the Braves, giving up 5 ER’s on 5 hits (1 HR). Mitchell has been crushed by RHB’s this season to the tune of .369 average/.622 slugging percentage/1.059 OPS. Goldschmidt is hitting .295 on the season with 31 HR’s and 78 RBI’s. Goldschmidt has a .436 average (24-55) against the Padres this season and is posting a .604 slugging percentage/1.040 OPS vs. LHP on the season. Souza Jr. is hitting .245 on the season with 4 HR’s and 27 RBI’s however, we know that he has plenty of power to hit HR’s and he has fared much better against LHP’s this season, posting a .826 OPS.
The Texas Rangers has an interesting matchup tonight against the RHP Matt Shoemaker of the Angels who will be making just his 2nd start of the season as he has been DL basically all season due to a forearm injury. Shoemaker is a solid pitcher, however, he should be on a pitch count today and he also doesn’t have a great history agianst the Rangers as over his last three seasons, he has posted a 12.34 ERA against Texas in three starts (11.2 IP, 22 hits, 16 ER). For the Rangers we’re going to roll with Nomar Mazara (OF) and Ronald Guzman (OF). Mazara is hitting just .267 on the season but has 20 HR’s and seems to have found his swing once again after missing some time due to injury. Mazara is hitting .286 over the past week and just destroyed the twins in their 3-game series going 5 for 14 with 4 HR’s and 7 RBI’s. Guzman has shown nice power this season, as he has registered 14 HR’s on the season and we like the fact that he has a solid .766 OPS (11 of 14) HR’s vs. RHP on the season. Guzman is hitting .400 over the past week with a HR and 6 RBI’s.
Rounding out the team tonight will be the Angels Taylor Ward (3B) in his matchup against the LHP Jeffrey Springs of the Texas Rangers. Springs has been solid out of the bullpen this season, posting a 2.55 ERA and 1.42 WHIP, but obviously, we can’t expect him to go deep into the game and I don’t hate getting Taylor Ward in the on the cheap. Ward was incredible this season down in the minors leagues as he posted a .345 average in Double-A and an even better .352 average in Triple-A. Ward is hitting just .207 since being called up to the majors but does have a couple HR’s and is hitting .286 agianst LHP on the season.
Please check back later as I’ll make any necessary updates due to “confirmed lineups” and/or weather.
