Update (12:43 PM) - Made some changes as the Washington DC weather doesn't look great. Image updated below! Good Luck!
Hi Everyone! It was a disappointing night as although both our value pitchers in Anthony DeSclafani (22.55 points) & Marco Gonzales (22.3 points) both had great nights for their price, our offense really disappointed us. We got solid performances from our Dodgers in Yasmani Grandal (14 points) and Joc Pederson (21 points) however, the rest of our high cost offense didn’t come through as no one else had double-digit points. Let’s take a look at today’s 11-game “featured” slate that starts at 1:05pm.
On the mound tonight we’re going to going with the Royals Brad Keller (P) and the Astros Charlie Morton (P). Keller has been outstanding in his rookie season and comes into his match-up against the Tigers with a 3.17 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. Keller has allowed 2 or less ER’s in 6 of his last 7 starts and currently is holding his opponents to just a .257 average. Keller’s match-up against the Tigers is a solid one as Detroit comes into this game ranked just 28th in team batting average vs. RHP (.237 average). Keller has a sub 3.00 ERA since the beginning of August and although he is not a huge strikeout pitcher (6.3 K/9), I think he is in for a solid over pitching line against the Tigers. Morton has had a great season as he comes into his match-up against the Los Angeles Angels with a 3.15 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. Morton is holding his opponents to just a .215 average on the season and just a .664 OPS. Morton has been gathering up strikeouts at a career pace this season and currently has a 10.8 K/9 ratio. Morton didn’t fare too well in his only other start against the Angels earlier this season, however, Morton has too much upside at this price to pace up against a team that certainly can struggle on the offensive end.
We’re going to kick off our offense with 4-man stack of Kansas City Royals in Salvador Perez (C), Hunter Dozier (1B), Whit Merrifield (2B), and Jorge Bonifacio (OF) in their match-up against the LHP Daniel Norris of the Detroit Tigers. Norris only has 6 starts on the season and he hasn’t been overly impressive this season posting a 5.71 ERA & 1.41 WHIP. Norris is allowing opponents to post a .765 OPS against him on the season and hasn’t fared well against the Royals over his career as the current roster is posting a .307 average/.919 OPS against him. Perez is hitting just .233 on the season, however, has shown some solid power as he comes into this game with 27 HR’s & 77 RBI’s. Perez has fared well against Detroit this season, hitting .293 (12-41) with a .917 OPS and also does have a HR off Norris in his career. Dozier comes into this game with a .230 average, however, has shown some decent pop in his bat as he has 10 HR’s & 32 RBI’s. Dozier has posted a .844 OPS over the past month and has a .786 OPS vs. Detroit on the season. Merrifield is having a monster season for the Royals as he comes into this game with a .304 average with 12 HR’s, 58 RBI’s, & 38 SB’s. Merrifield has hit .333 over the past week and has posted a .358 average/.936 OPS vs. LHP on the season. Bonifacio is hitting just .231 on the season with 4 HR’s & 23 RBI’s however, he has been hitting in a good spot in the Royals lineup and has posted a respectable .772 OPS vs. LHP.
We’re going to be paying up for Washington’s Anthony Rendon (3B) in his match-up against the LHP Steven Matz of the New York Mets. Matz comes into this game with a 4.03 ERA and 1.24 WHIP on the season. Matz has pitched well, however, he doesn’t have the tendency to give up HR’s to RHP and he hasn’t fared well against the Nationals this season as he has posted a 5.48 ERA over 5 starts. Rendon has had a great season as he comes into this game with a .305 average with 22 HR’s & 83 RBI’s. Rendon is hitting .478 over the past week with 3 HR’s and has crushed the Mets this season to the tune of a .390 average (23 for 59).
We’re paying up for the Cubs Javier Baez (SS) in his match-up against the LHP Carlos Rodon of the White Sox. Rodon comes into this game with a 3.22 ERA and 1.13 WHIP, however, has struggled a bit more as of late as he has allowed 4 ER’s in three of his last four starts. Rodon has been much worse on the road this season and has allowed at least one HR in five of his last six games. Baez is putting up an MVP type season as he comes into this game with a .293 average with 34 HR’s and 110 RBI’s. Baez has posted a .297 average/.923 OPS vs. LHP on the season and has posted a .908 OPS since the All-Star break.
We needed to save so money somewhere after paying up for Rendon & Baez, so we’re going to be going with Miami’s Lewis Brinson (OF) in his match-up against the RHP Michael Lorenzen of the Cincinnati Reds. Lorenzen has primary worked out of the bullpen this season as this will only be his 2nd start and comes into this game with a 3.03 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. Brinson is an up and coming player for the Marlins and was the main piece the Marlins received in the Christian Yelich trade. Brinson is htting just .199 on the season, however, does have some pop in his bat as he has 11 HR’s on the season. Brinson has picked up hits in 3 of his last 5 games and although we can’t expect much, the talent and upside is there with Brinson hitting out of the 6-hole at this price.
Rounding out the team today, we’re going to be going with Baltimore’s Trey Mancini (OF) in his match-up vs. the LHP J.A. Happ of the New York Yankees. Happ comes into this game with a solid 3.62 ERA and 1.13 WHIP on the season and although he will most likely be a highly owned pitcher today, I don’t mind going up against him with a power RHB, as Happ has already allowed 23 HR’s to RHB’s on the season. Mancini is hitting just .240 on the season however, he does have 23 HR’s and 53 RBI’s. Mancini has posted a .798 OPS since the All-Star break and although he hasn’t fared well with Happ in his career, I like his HR upside today batting out of the clean-up spot.
Lineups are confirmed so we should be good to go!
