FedEx St. Jude Classic: Thursday, June 9, 2016 at 1:00 pm (TPC Southwind) See the Latest Odds
TV: PGA, NBC
We head to Memphis, Tennessee this week for the FedEx St. Jude Classic, an event that debuted in 1958 as the Memphis Open. Even with all the history at this tournament, only five players have won this course more than once, and Dave Hill leads the way with four victories.
You guys know the deal, as we’re looking for big longshot players who can produce a monster payday.
USA TODAY Sports
Here are some golfers to consider for your card this week.
Harris English - Harris English is no stranger to TPC Southwind, as he’s made the cut in two of his three appearances and won here back in 2013. English hasn’t had the most consistent season overall, but he is coming off a runner-up finish at the Dean & DeLuca and did have a top-20 finish at the Wells Fargo. English has shown signs of turning things around and maybe playing on a course he’s had success at will help give him that extra push. I like English this week with +2400 odds.
Brooks Koepka - Brooks Koepka enters this match in good form after finishing runner-up at the Byron Nelson and getting a top-10 finish at the WGC Match Play. Koepka now has four top-10 finishes in 13 events and has missed the cut just three times. Koepka also has top-20 finishes in both of his appearances at the TPC Southwind, and he’s ninth in driving distance and 17th in scoring average. There’s great value with Koepka and odds of +1050.
Brendan Steele - Brendan Steele enters this tournament in solid form with three top-20 finishes in his last four events and seven top-25 finishes in 16 events overall. Steele is coming off a 20-place finish at the Memorial Tournament and has finished 20th or better in five of his last 10 tournaments. Steele is also 14th in driving distance and 15th in san save percentage. I’ll take a stab given Steele’s current form with odds of +5000.
Retief Goosen - Looking for a monster longshot this week? Try your hand with Retief Goosen and odds of +14500. Goosen has made the cut in five of his seven appearances at TPC Southwind and had a third place finish back in 2011. Goosen also enters this tournament in great form as he’s finished 14th or better in his last two events and he nearly had a top-10 finish at the Valspar Championship. Goosen is a sleeper play with a chance to hit a hole in one given those odds.
Justin Leonard - Another big boy play this week will be Justin Leonard with odds of +20000. Leonard is one of just five players to win the FedEx St. Jude Classic more than once, which makes these odds worth a play off the top. But Leonard also isn’t playing terrible golf overall, as he does have two top-20 finishes in his last four events and is fourth in driving accuracy percentage. Leonard has been rather consistent in his short sample size this season and is worth a look given his history on this course.
