We stay in California for the fourth time in the last five weeks, this time for the 2018 Genesis Open. What some still consider the Los Angeles Open, this event is played at the Riviera Country Club and is a little over 7,300 yards of gorgeous greens in Southern Cal. Ten of the last 11 years, this event has been decided by two or less strokes, so there’s sure to be competition and value out in there in terms of betting.
Here are five golfers to consider throwing on your card this week.
USA TODAY Sports
Bubba Watson - Bubba Watson hasn’t had any noteworthy performances since the QBE Shootout, but he has made the cut in four of his last five events and is 11th in driving distance. Watson has missed the cut just twice since The Greenbrier Classic last July. And if there as one event that could inspire a breakthrough performance, it would probably be the Genesis Open considering he won it in 2014 and 2016. Guess what? It’s another even year. Watson is worth a play simply based on his history, and it doesn’t hurt that we’re getting him with +4500 odds.
Dustin Johnson - Dustin Johnson is back to being Dustin Johnson, finishing runner-up or better in three of his last four events. Johnson is also second in eagles (holes per), first in birdie average and first in scoring average. Simply put, Johnson is the best golfer in the world right now. As for this course, Johnson is the defending champion with a -17 to par last year, and he’s finished no worse than fourth in each of his last four appearances at the Riviera Country Club. There’s also a history of golfers winning this event multiple times within one another. While the favorite, I’ll still take Johnson and +500 odds.
Marc Leishman - Marc Leishman has been really solid this season, producing three top-25 finishes and has just one missed cut since the AT&T Byron Nelson back in May. Leishman enters this week 14th in birdie average and has been able to enjoy a week off, which should help. Two of Leishman’s three PGA wins have come early in the year, and he does have three career top-25 finishes at the Genesis Open. Leishman seems like a nice value play this week with +3500 odds.
Alex Noren - Alex Noren has shown he’s not going away, as he followed up his runner-up performance at the Farmers Insurance Open with a top-25 finish at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Noren is hitting the ball with confidence and driving the ball a long way off the tee, which are signs he’s going to continue the impressive performances. Noren must improve his short game if he’s going to win in loaded fields like this one, but I’ll still take a stab with him and +4500 odds this week.
Tommy Fleetwood - It’s been awhile since we’ve seen Tommy Fleetwood on the PGA Tour, but his last appearance was a third place finish in the Hero World Challenge. Since then, Fleetwood won the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship for a second straight year, putting on a performance that was one for the ages, -22 to par. You could make a case Fleetwood is hitting the ball better than anybody in the game right now and should have much lower odds than what he has now. I’ll take a shot with Fleetwood and +2800 odds.
