John Deere Classic: PGA Golf Pick, Odds, Preview, Predictions, Dark Horses - 7/12/18

The 2018 John Deere Classic

John Deere Classic: Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 1:00 pm (TPC Deere Run) See the Latest Odds

We make our first and only trip to Illinois this week for the John Deere Classic, an event that debuted in 1971 and has one of the lower prize funds at $5.8 million. This has been one of the easier events for players over the years, as the winner has been at least -16 to par every year since 1998. The field is wide open with a lot of the top players throwing their hat in the ring for the Scottish Open, so there’s money to be made out there.

Here are five golfers to consider throwing on your card this week.

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Francesco Molinari - Francesco Molinari isn’t one of the long shot bets I look for at +1000, and he has no course history, but he’s a must bet given the watered down field this week. Molinari is coming off a win at the Quicken Loans National and also won the BMW PGA Championship a couple of months ago. Molinari has finished 26th or better in seven of his last nine PGA events and is 28th in greens in regulation percentage. Few golfers in the world are hotter than the Italian. Give me Molinari and a chance to make 10 times my money.

Zach Johnson - Zach Johnson is another guy who isn’t going to break the bank at +1200 odds, but he’s put together back-to-back top-20 finishes and enters this week 22nd in scoring average. Johnson is also one of the more experienced players at this event and has finished fifth or better in five of his last six appearances. Johnson was runner-up at the John Deere Classic in 2014, 2013, 2009 and won the event in 2012. You can’t argue with that history, folks. Johnson is a strong play this weekend.

Scottish Open Betting Golf Preview, Predictions, Picks and Dark Horses

Wesley Bryan - If you’re looking for a bigger payday, you can try your hand with Wesley Bryan and +4500 odds. Bryan is playing his most consistent golf of the year, as he’s made the cut in each of his last five events and has finished 26th or better in two of his last three events. Bryan also has two appearances at the TPC Deere Run, and those two trips resulted in an eighth place finish in 2016 and a third place finish last year. Bryan is a nice under the radar pick that could pay off big.

Johnson Wagner - It’s been over six years since Johnson Wagner has won a PGA event, which explains why you can get him this week at +6600 odds. With that said, Wagner has made the cut in eight of his last 10 events and has been able to sprinkle in some decent finishes here and there. Wagner has also finished seventh or better in three of his last four appearances at the TPC Deere Run. Wagner likes this course and should be able to hold his own better than usual in a wide open field. This could be the week the 38-year-old ends in win drought.

Ryan Moore - Ryan Moore won the John Deere Classic in 2016 and had top-10 finishes in 2014 and 2012. Moore has finished no worse than 24th in five of his last six appearances overall at the TPC Deere Run. As for his current form, Moore had a top-15 finish last week at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier and has shot at least a -7 to par in five of his last seven events. Moore is currently third in driving accuracy percentage and 17th in scoring average. Moore will be in the think of things until the very end, making +1800 odds a worthwhile play.
