We make our second and final trip to Ohio for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, an event that debuted back in 1999 and is one of the final warmups before the PGA Championship. Eight of the last nine winners have had a field day on this course, producing at least a -11 to par. We didn’t win last week, but we’ve produced a couple winners over the last month and have provided much value with guys who are in the thick of things until the final hole. Let’s stay in this zone.
Here are five golfers to consider throwing on your card this week.
Thomas J. Russo-USA TODAY Sports
Francesco Molinari - We made some nice cash with Francesco Molinari at the Open, and there’s no reason to keep him off your card, especially when getting him at +2800 odds. Molinari’s last three events are a victory at the Quicken Loans National, runner-up finish at the John Deere Classic and a victory at the Open. Throw in a top-25 finish at the US Open, and no golfer is hotter right now than Molinari. The Italian hasn’t had a great history on this course, but I’m not sure that matters given his form. Give me Molinari and the big odds once again.
Tiger Woods - We’re not getting the best price in the world on Tiger Woods due to everybody betting on him and him being popular with the public. But you still have to like Tiger and +1200 odds this week. Tiger is showing more than a good round these days, as he’s put together back-to-back top-10 finishes and has finished inside the top-25 in four of his last five events. The swagger is back and he’s getting more and more comfortable each time he takes the greens. Oh, Woods is an eight-time winner at this event, with the most recent coming in 2013. The drought could end this week, folks.
Rickie Fowler - We have to get our Rickie Fowler fix in before he disappoints us yet again in a big event. Fowler is in solid form with top-25 finishes in six of his last eight events and has missed the cut just once since Mexico. Fowler has also produced four straight top-10 finishes at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, which doesn’t include a runner-up spot back in 2011. Fowler will be in the mix for his first victory in a year and a half, making him worth a play this week at +2000 odds.
Xander Schauffele - If you’re looking for a longer shot, you can try your hand with Xander Schauffele at +4000 odds. Schauffele has been really hitting the ball recently, as he finished runner-up at the British Open, 21st at Greenbrier and had a top-10 finish at the US Open. Schauffele is quietly playing some of the more consistent golf of his young career, and you can expect that to continue this week considering he finished 13th here last year in his only appearance at the Firestone Country Club.
Webb Simpson - Webb Simpson is another golfer who has put together some nice performances, finishing 12th or better in three of his last six events and producing a top-25 finish in six of his last seven times making the cut. Besides the Players Championship, Simpson hasn’t gotten over the hump by really pushing for victories, but you can appreciate a player constantly in the mix on the final day, especially when you can get him at +5500 odds. Simpson has an average finish of 23.3 in three appearances at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
