The 2018 Safeway Open
Safeway Open: Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 1:00 pm (Silverado Country Club) See the Latest Odds
After bombing in the Ryder Cup due to the US not showing up, we turn our attention to the 2019 season for the Safeway Open. This event debuted in 2007 and will be played at the Silverado Country Club. We should be in for a treat considering the margin of victory has never been over two strokes and we’ve witnessed a playoff four times since 2008.
Here are five golfers to consider throwing on your card this week.
Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports
Emiliano Grillo - Emiliano Grillo has finished outside of the top-30 five times in his last six events, but he rarely misses the cut and has had a great deal of success at the Safeway Open despite a short sample size. Not only did Grillo win this tournament in 2015, but he had a near top-25 finish in 2017. In two appearances at this tournament, Grillo has an average finish of 14.5. You can make an argument Grillo should be the favorite this week, but you can get him at +2800.
Adam Hadwin - Adam Hadwin has top-25 finishes in each of his last three events, easily some of his most consistent golf of the year. Hadwin has improved his driving accuracy percentage the last couple of months and heads to a tournament where he’s made the cut three times and had a top-10 finish in 2011. Hadwin has an average finish of 33.6 at the Safeway Open and has a chance to improve that based on his current form. I’ll take a shot with Hadwin and +3300 odds.
Ryan Moore - Ryan Moore really struggled down the stretch and hasn’t won a tournament since the 2016 John Deere Classic. The good news is Moore has top-20 finishes in all three of his appearances at the Safeway Open, which includes top-10 showings in 2015 and 2008. In three appearances at this event, Moore has an average finish of 11.6. If there was ever a tournament that would allow Moore to end the drought, it’s this one. Give me Moore and odds of +2200.
Brendan Steele - Brendan Steele has missed the cut in four of his last five events and hasn’t seen a top-25 finish since the Zurich Classic of New Orleans back in April. The struggle has been real for the 35-year-old from Cali. However, Steele has won this event in each of the last two years and has a couple of other top-25 finishes. Steele clearly enjoys playing back home, and despite his struggles, he still had one of the stronger driving distances of anyone on tour. I’ll take the two-time defending champ and my +4000 odds.
Chez Reavie - After a string of missing the cut, Chez Reavie has finished seven or more strokes under par in three of his last four events and has 12 top-25 finishes in 19 times in which he’s made the cut. Reavie has top-20 finishes in his last two appearances at the Safeway Open and top-25 finishes in four of his last six appearances overall. While it’s been 10 years since Reavie has won a PGA event, his current form and history at this course suggests him being a dark horse this week. I like the value of +6000 odds.
