This Thursday, the PGA Tour presents the first round of the 2021 Valero Texas Open.
Before I discuss my favorite matchup bets for the first round of the 2021 Valero Texas Open let’s take a look at the current leaders in first round scoring average on the PGA Tour.
Here is a list of the top ten ranked golfers in first round scoring average on the PGA Tour that are in this week’s 2021 Valero Texas Open field with that player’s average first round score this season.
1 Kevin Chappell 69.13
2 Cameron Tringale 69.14
3 Scottie Scheffler 69.23
4 Russell Knox 69.38
T5 Chris Kirk 69.50
T5 Doug Ghim 69.50
7 Abraham Ancer 69.58
8 Charley Hoffman 69.65
9 Keegan Bradley 69.67
10 Patton Kizzire 69.71
*I think it is important for me to note that (as of this writing) wind gusts of over 30MPH are forecast for Thursday morning. The current weather forecast has the wind gusts lowering to 10 MPH after 1pm. Keep that information in mind as you evaluate which golfers to place wagers on in the first round.
Now let’s shift our focus to my favorite first round matchup bets for the 2021 Valero Texas Open.
Tony Finau -162 over Cameron Champ
Since the beginning of September, Tony Finau has played nine events on the PGA Tour. In those nine events played on the PGA Tour, Finau has an impressive six top 14 finishes, including a second place result at the Genesis Invitational. In direct contrast to Finau, Cameron Champ has not been playing well. To be more specific, Champ has missed the cut in five of his last six tournaments played on the PGA Tour.
Graeme McDowell +138 over Aaron Wise
McDowell and Aaron Wise are both scheduled to start the 2021 Valero Texas Open's first round at 9:42AM Thursday morning. I noted earlier in this article that wind gusts of over 30MPH are expected during that time period. For those readers that are not aware, Graeme McDowell is an outstanding wind player. McDowell was born and raised in Ireland. I think the high winds won't be an issue for McDowell. Additionally, McDowell arrives at this week's Valero Texas Open on the heels of a fourth place result at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship. It should also be noted that McDowell finished seventh at the 2019 Valero Texas Open.
