This Thursday morning, the first round of the 2021 Gran Canaria Lopesan Open will begin!
Before I discuss my favorite matchup bets for the first round of the 2021 Gran Canaria Lopesan Open let’s take a look at the current leaders in scoring average on the European Tour.
Here is the current list of the top ten golfers in scoring average on the European Tour that are in this week’s 2021 Gran Canaria Lopesan Open field with that player’s average first round score this season.
1 Sam Horsfield 68.08
2 Calum Hill 68.61
3 Niklas Lemke 69.00
4 Victor Dubuisson 69.19
5 Johannes Veerman 69.50
T6 Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez 69.50
T6 Antoine Rozner 69.50
8 Kurt Kitayama 69.54
9 Ondrej Lieser 69.96
10 Jamie Donaldson 69.60
Now that we have identified the top ten golfers in scoring average in this week’s field, let’s shift our focus to my favorite first round matchup bets for the 2021 Gran Canaria Lopesan Open.
Matthias Schwab -106 over Mike Lorenzo-Vera
Schwab arrives at this week’s European Tour event in Spain on the heels of two consecutive top seven finishes, including a seventh place result at the Kenya Savannah Classic last month. Additionally, in his last eight competitive rounds played on the European Tour, Schwab has four rounds of 66 or lower. That is the type of low scoring I am looking for in a single round matchup bet. I love Schwab’s chances of defeating Mike Lorenzo-Vera in this first round matchup.
Antoine Rozner -106 over Scott Jamieson
Since the beginning of December, Antoine Rozner has played seven events (European and PGA Tours combined). In those seven tournaments just mentioned, Rozner has an impressive five top 18 finishes, including two wins (2020 DP World Tour Championship, 2021 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters). Rozner currently ranks 14th in scoring average (69.50), 22nd in strokes gained tee to green (1.57), and 21th in strokes gained off the tee (0.71) on the European Tour.
Rozner's opponent in this matchup, Scott Jamieson, has not been playing good golf lately. Let me be more specific. Jamieson has missed two of his last three cuts. His only made cut in that three tournament stretch was a 42nd place result at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.
