Fortinet Championship: PGA Tour Predictions, Odds 9/16/21

Fortinet Championship
September 16, 2021 10:00 am EDT

This week, the PGA Tour travels to California for the Fortinet Championship.

Before I discuss my favorite golf bets for this week’s PGA Tour event let’s take a quick look at the golf course the field will play and the key player statistics that I think are the most vital to a player’s success this week.

The Fortinet Championship will be played at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California. This golf course is a par 72 that measures approximately 7,123 yards. This track is a classical golf course with tight tree-lined fairways. It should be noted that this tournament has been held at the Silverado Resort and Spa every year since 2014.

To assist me with determining my favorite golf bets for this event, I reviewed the statistics of the last three winners of the Fortinet Championship (previously Safeway Open). Having stated that, the key player statistics that I will be focusing on this week are strokes gained tee to green, strokes gained off the tee, strokes gained approach, GIR (greens in regulation), driving accuracy, and scrambling.

*The Fortinet Championship was previously known as the Safeway Open from 2016-2020. The event received a new title sponsor this year which resulted in the name change.

Now let’s shift our focus to my favorite golf bets for this week’s Fortinet Championship!

Here is a golfer to consider placing on your card to finish in the top five.

Hudson Swafford +250

The 34 year old arrives at this week’s Fortinet Championship on the heels of two consecutive top 17 finishes on the PGA Tour, including an 11th place result at the 2021 Northern Trust last month.

In relation to this week’s current listed Fortinet Championship field, in the last 12 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Hudson Swafford ranks first in GIR (greens in regulation), third in strokes gained approach, second in strokes gained ball striking, and tenth in birdie or better percentage.

It should also be noted that Swafford finished 15th at the 2015 Safeway Open.

Here are two golfers to consider placing on your card to finish in the top ten.

Chez Reavie +400

The 39 year old American has accumulated five top 31 finishes in his last ten tournaments played on the PGA Tour, including an 11th place result at the 2021 Northern Trust three weeks ago. It has to be said that the Northern Trust had a field of talent that was far better with regard to overall talent than this week’s field at the 2021 Fortinet Championship. My point is simple. If Reavie can post an 11th place result at the Northern Trust he certainly can post a top ten result at this week’s event.

Harold Varner III +300

Varner III arrives at this week’s PGA Tour event in good form. Let me be more specific. Varner III has accumulated three top 12 finishes in his last five tournaments played on the PGA Tour, including a 12th place result at the 2021 BMW Championship two weeks ago.

In relation to this week’s current listed Fortinet Championship field, in the last 12 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Harold Varner III ranks fifth in GIR (greens in regulation), seventh in strokes gained approach, and 15th in bogey avoidance.

Varner III also checks the box for me when it comes to previous event/course history. Varner III has played the Safeway Open three times since 2018. In those three tournaments just mentioned, Varner III has accumulated three top 29 finishes, including a 14th place result at the 2018 Safeway Open.
