*I should note that the first round data just provided is isolated to the new PGA Tour season. The first event of the new PGA Tour season was the Fortinet Championship which took place last month.
Now that we have established who the top five golfers with regard to first round scoring average are on the PGA Tour (in this week’s field) let’s shift our attention to my favorite first round matchup bets for this week’s Shriners Hospitals Open.
Will Zalatoris -120 over Brian Harman
Will Zalatoris arrives at this week’s Shriners Hospitals Open on the heels of two consecutive top 14 finishes on the PGA Tour, including an 11th place result at the Fortinet Championship three weeks ago. Additionally, I like the fact that Zalatoris has performed well at multiple major championships this year. Zalatoris finished second at the 2021 Masters in April and eighth at the 2021 PGA Championship in May.
In relation to this week’s current listed Shriners Hospitals Open field, in the last 12 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Will Zalatoris ranks second in GIR (greens in regulation), ninth in strokes gained off the tee, 13th in driving distance, fourth in strokes gained ball striking, and second in bogey avoidance.
It should also be noted that Zalatoris finished fifth at the 2020 Shriners Hospitals Open.
Kevin Streelman -125 over Lucas Glover
Streelman has accumulated five top 20 finishes in his last ten tournaments played on the PGA Tour, including a seventh place result at the Wyndham Championship in August.
In relation to this week’s current listed Shriners Hospitals Open field, in the last 36 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Kevin Streelman ranks sixth in driving accuracy, seventh in GIR (greens in regulation), second in proximity to the hole from 100-125 yards, ninth in scrambling, and eighth in bogey avoidance.
I also like the fact that Kevin Streelman has posted quality results at this week’s PGA Tour event previously. Streelman has played the Shriners Hospitals Open ten times since 2009. In those ten tournaments just mentioned, Kevin Streelman has accumulated five top 22 finishes, including a second place result at the 2014 Shriners Hospitals Open.
