This week, the PGA Tour travels to Texas for the Houston Open.
Before I discuss my favorite tournament matchup bets for the Houston Open let’s take a look at the current leaders in scoring average on the PGA Tour that are in this week’s field.
Top Five Golfers in Scoring Average
- Matthew Wolff 69.07
- Sam Burns 69.45
- Talor Gooch 69.52
- Sungjae Im 69.53
- Seamus Power 69.76
*I should note that the scoring average data just provided is isolated to the new PGA Tour season. The first event of the new PGA Tour season was the Fortinet Championship which took place in September.
Now that we have established who the top five golfers with regard to scoring average are on the PGA Tour (in this week’s field) let’s shift our attention to my favorite tournament matchup bets for this week’s Houston Open.
Matthew Wolff -120 over Adam Scott
Matthew Wolff arrives at this week’s Houston Open on the heels of two consecutive top five finishes on the PGA Tour, including a second place result at the Shriners Children’s Hospitals Open four weeks ago.

Wolff also checks the box for me when it comes to key player statistics. In relation to this week’s current listed Houston Open field, in the last 12 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Matthew Wolff ranks ninth in GIR (greens in regulation), ninth in bogey avoidance, fifth in scrambling, first in driving distance, and third in birdie or better percentage.
I should also note that Matthew Wolff has performed at a high level at multiple major championships in the past. Wolff finished second at the 2020 U.S. Open, 15th at the 2021 U.S. Open, and fourth at the 2020 PGA Championship. In summary, I am backing Matthew Wolff to defeat Adam Scott this week.
Seamus Power -110 over Christiaan Bezuidenhout
Seamus Power has played 11 tournaments on the PGA Tour since the beginning of June. In those 11 events just mentioned, Power has accumulated an impressive eight top 21 finishes, including a win at the 2021 Barbasol Championship in July.
In relation to this week’s current listed Houston Open field, in the last 12 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Seamus Power ranks 11th in GIR (greens in regulation), ninth in bogey avoidance, and first in strokes gained on par fours.
