Houston Open: First Round Matchup Bets, Odds 11/11/21

Houston Open
November 11, 2021 7:20 am EDT

This Thursday morning, the first round of the Houston Open will begin.

Before I discuss my favorite matchup bets for the first round of the Houston Open let’s take a look at the current leaders in first round scoring average on the PGA Tour that are in this week’s field.

Top Five Golfers in First Round Scoring Average

1 Matthew Wolff 64.33

T2 Cameron Smith 66.00

T2 Sungjae Im 66.00

T2 Talor Gooch 66.00

5 Aaron Wise 66.25

*I should note that the scoring average data just provided is isolated to the new PGA Tour season. The first event of the new PGA Tour season was the Fortinet Championship which took place in September.

Now let’s shift our focus to my favorite matchup bets for the first round of the Houston Open.

Maverick McNealy -120 over Ian Poulter

Maverick McNealy has accumulated two consecutive top 25 finishes on the PGA Tour, including an 11th place result at the World Wide Technology at Mayakoba last week.

In relation to this week’s current listed Houston Open field, in the last eight rounds played on the PGA Tour, Maverick McNealy ranks seventh in GIR (greens in regulation), seventh in bogey avoidance, fourth in strokes gained on par fours, and fifth in proximity to the hole.

McNealy also checks the box for me when it comes to previous event/course history. McNealy finished 20th at the 2020 Houston Open.

Talor Gooch -120 over Harold Varner III

Talor Gooch has accumulated four consecutive top 11 finishes on the PGA Tour, including an impressive fifth place result at the CJ Cup @ Summit three weeks ago.

In relation to this week’s current listed Houston Open field, in the last 12 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Gooch ranks second in GIR (greens in regulation), tenth in birdie or better percentage, third in strokes gained tee to green, eighth in strokes gained ball striking, and second in strokes gained around the green.

I should note that Talor Gooch finished fourth at last year’s Houston Open.

I also like the fact that Talor Gooch’s opponent in this matchup (Harold Varner III) did not play well last week. More specifically, Harold Varner III missed the cut at last week’s World Wide Technology at Mayakoba.
