Before I dive into my favorite golf bets for this week’s DP World Tour event let’s take a quick look at the golf course the field will play and the key player statistics that I think are the most important to a player’s success at the Joburg Open.
The Joburg Open will be played at the Firethorn Course at Randpark Golf Club in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Firethorn Course is a par 71 that measures approximately 7,506 yards. However, it should be mentioned that this event will be held at altitude which will actually have the golf course play at around 7,000 yards. The Firethorn Course has hosted this week’s DP World Tour event in the past. More specifically, the Firethorn Course hosted the Joburg Open in 2021 and 2017.
*The average cumulative four round winning score of the two previous winners of the Joburg Open when it was held at the Firethorn Course was 21 under par (2020 Joachim B. Hansen -19: 2017 Shubhankar Sharma -23).
The key player statistics I will be focusing on for this event are strokes gained ball striking, GIR (greens in regulation), scrambling, bogey avoidance, and putts per GIR.
Now let’s shift our focus to my favorite golf bets for the Joburg Open!
Here are two golfers to consider placing on your card to finish in the top ten.
George Coetzee +250
Last month, George Coetzee fired a third round 66 at the 2021 Open de España en route to an eventual 24th place finish on the European Tour. Additionally, Coetzee won the 2021 Vodacom Origins of Golf on the Sunshine Tour in August.
I also like the fact that Coetzee has performed well at the Firethorn Course in the past. The Firethorn Course hosted the 2020 South African Open. George Coetzee finished sixth at the 2020 South African Open.
Jayden Schaper +350
The 20 year old South African certainly appears to like playing competitive golf at the Firethorn Course based on his recent results there. Schaper finished 18th at the 2021 Joburg Open and sixth at the 2020 South African Open.
Schaper also arrives at this event in rather good form. Schaper has accumulated four consecutive top 12 finishes on the Sunshine Tour, including a fifth place result at the South African PGA Championship three weeks ago.
Here is a golfer to consider placing on your card to finish in the top 20.
Jens Dantorp +400
The 32 year old has accumulated three top 21 finishes in his last five events played on the European Challenge Tour, including a fourth place result at the Open de Portugal.
I should also note that the current weather forecast for this week’s four day tournament in Johannesburg, South Africa indicates a windy event. Having stated that, Jens Dantorp is an exceptional wind player that I see finding his way to a top 20 finish.
