Hero World Challenge
December 2, 2021 11:05 am EDT
This week, the PGA Tour presents the golf betting community with the Hero World Challenge.
Before I discuss my favorite tournament matchup bets for the Hero World Challenge let’s take a look at the current leaders in scoring average on the PGA Tour that are in this week’s field.
Top Five Golfers in Scoring Average
- Collin Morikawa 68.91
- Rory McIlroy 69.31
- Viktor Hovland 69.67
- Justin Thomas 69.75
- Scottie Scheffler 69.97
*The Hero World Challenge is a limited field (20 players) event. Additionally, this tournament will not have a standard cut after two rounds. All 20 golfers in the field will play all four rounds.
Now that we have determined who the top five golfers with regard to scoring average are on the PGA Tour (in this week’s field) let’s shift our attention to my favorite tournament matchup bets for this week’s Hero World Challenge.
Justin Thomas -110 over Collin Morikawa
Since the beginning of August, Justin Thomas has played six tournaments on the PGA Tour. In those six events just mentioned, Thomas has accumulated an impressive five top 22 finishes, including a third place result at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba four weeks ago.

Justin Thomas also checks the box for me when it comes to key player statistics. In relation to this week’s current listed Hero World Challenge field, in the last 12 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Thomas ranks second in strokes gained tee to green, fourth in strokes gained ball striking, fifth in strokes gained on par fours, and second in birdie or better percentage.
It should also be noted that Justin Thomas finished fifth at the 2019 Hero World Challenge.
Matthew Fitzpatrick -120 over Tyrrell Hatton
Matthew Fitzpatrick arrives at this week’s Hero World Challenge in rather good form. Let me be more specific. Since the beginning of October, Matthew Fitzpatrick has played four tournaments (PGA and DP World Tours combined). In those four events just mentioned, Fitzpatrick has accumulated two top two finishes, including a win at the 2021 Estrella Damm Andalucia Masters.
Matthew Fitzpatrick certainly checks the box for me when it comes to key player statistics. In relation to this week’s current listed Hero World Challenge field, in the last four weeks of competitive golf played, Fitzpatrick ranks fifth in GIR (greens in regulation-72.2%) and sixth in scrambling (69.7%).
In direct contrast to Matthew Fitzpatrick, Tyrrell Hatton has not been playing well. Hatton has missed the cut in four of his last seven tournaments played on the PGA Tour.
