This Thursday morning, the first round of the 2022 Travelers Championship will begin.

Before I discuss my favorite tournament matchup bets for the 2022 Travelers Championship let’s take a look at the current leaders in scoring average on the PGA Tour that are in this week’s field.

Top Five Golfers in Scoring Average

  1. Rory McIlroy 68.65
  2. Scottie Scheffler 69.22
  3. Sam Burns 69.49
  4. Patrick Cantlay 69.83
  5. Joaquin Niemann 69.87

Now that we have established who the top five golfers with regard to scoring average are on the PGA Tour (in this week’s field) let’s shift our attention to my favorite tournament matchup bets for this week’s 2022 Travelers Championship.

Top Australian: Jason Day +185

Last month, Jason Day fired a first round 63 at the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship on his way to an eventual 15th place finish.

Jason Day certainly checks the box for me when it comes to previous course/event history. Let me be more specific. Day has played this week’s PGA Tour event six times since 2014. In those six tournaments just mentioned, Day has accumulated an impressive four top 18 finishes, including a tenth place result at the 2021 Travelers Championship.

For those readers that are unaware, the other Australians in this week’s field are Marc Leishman, Brett Drewitt, and Cameron Davis.

Seamus Power +200 over Rory McIlroy

Yes, I know that Rory McIlroy has been playing outstanding golf on the PGA Tour this year. However, I also know that Rory has played three events in a row, including last week’s U.S. Open. It should be noted that Rory was in contention throughout the final round of the U.S. Open. In my opinion, it’s certainly plausible that Rory is mentally exhausted.

I also like the fact that Seamus Power arrives at this week’s 2022 Travelers Championship playing great golf as well. More specifically, Power has accumulated three top 17 finishes in his last four events played on the PGA Tour, including an impressive ninth place result at the 2022 PGA Championship four weeks ago.

The final reason I am backing Power in this matchup wager is his odds of +200. I love the value in that number.
