Now that we have established who the top ten golfers with regard to scoring average are on the PGA Tour Champions (in this week’s field) let’s shift our attention to my favorite first round matchup bets for this week’s 2021 Constellation Furyk & Friends.
Jim Furyk -125 over Steve Alker
Jim Furyk has played quite simply outstanding golf on the PGA Tour Champions this season. Let me provide you with relevant data to better shed light on my previous statement. Jim Furyk has played ten tournaments on the PGA Tour Champions since the beginning of June. In those ten events just mentioned, Furyk has accumulated an impressive seven top ten finishes, including a win at the 2021 U.S. Senior Open Championship in July.
Furyk also checks the box for me when it comes to recent first round scores on the PGA Tour Champions. Since the beginning of August, Jim Furyk has played four tournaments on the PGA Tour Champions. Furyk’s average first round score in the four events just mentioned was 66.5.
It should also be noted that Jim Furyk is the host of this week’s inaugural PGA Tour Champions event in Jacksonville, Florida. Furyk currently a resides in Ponte Vedra, Florida which is located approximately thirty minutes from the host course of this week’s event, the Timuquana Country Club. I assure you that Furyk has played more rounds of golf at the Timuquana Country Club course than any other player in this week’s field. Clearly, Furyk’s familiarity with the golf course is a big advantage for him. In summary, I am backing Jim Furyk to defeat Steve Alker in this first round matchup.
Kevin Sutherland -120 over Fred Couples
Since the beginning of March, Kevin Sutherland has played ten tournaments on the PGA Tour Champions. In those ten tournaments just mentioned, Sutherland has accumulated six top 18 finishes, including a win at the 2021 Cologuard Classic.
Sutherland also checks the box for me when it comes to key player statistics. Sutherland is currently ranked first in GIR (greens in regulation-74.68%), fifth in scrambling (64.67%), fifth in putting average (1.751), and first in birdie average (4.29) on the PGA Tour Champions.
