This Saturday morning, the third round of the 2022 PGA Championship will begin.
Before I discuss my favorite matchup bets for the third round of the 2022 PGA Championship let’s take a look at the current leaders in scoring average on the PGA Tour that are in this week’s field.
Top Five Golfers in Scoring Average

- Shane Lowry 69.52
- Matt Fitzpatrick 69.62
- Justin Thomas 69.64
Now that we have determined who the top five golfers with regard to scoring average are on the PGA Tour (in this week’s field) let’s shift our attention to my favorite third round matchup bets for this week’s 2022 PGA Championship.
Justin Thomas -115 over Rory McIlroy
The 2017 PGA champion arrives at this week’s 2022 PGA Championship in rather good form. Since the beginning of January, Justin Thomas has played nine tournaments on the PGA Tour. In those nine events just mentioned, Thomas has accumulated an impressive seven top 20 finishes, including a fifth place result at last week’s 2022 AT&T Byron Nelson.
In relation to this week’s current listed 2022 PGA Championship field, in the last 24 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Justin Thomas ranks first in strokes gained tee to green, fifth in strokes gained ball striking, fourth in strokes gained approach, and third in bogey avoidance.
Through two rounds of competitive play at the 2022 PGA Championship, Justin Thomas is currently in third place with a score of six under par.
Shane Lowry -115 over Jordan Spieth
Since the beginning of February, Shane Lowry has played five tournaments on the PGA Tour. In those five events just mentioned, Lowry has accumulated five consecutive top 13 finishes, including a third place result at the 2022 RBC Heritage in April.
In relation to this week’s current listed 2022 PGA Championship field, in the last 50 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Shane Lowry ranks 11th in strokes gained tee to green, sixth in strokes gained approach, and third in bogey avoidance.
It should also be noted that Shane Lowry finished fourth at the 2022 PGA Championship.
