This week, the European Tour travels to Portugal for the 2021 Portugal Masters.
Before I dive into my favorite golf bets for this week’s European Tour event let’s take a look at the golf course the field will play and some additional facts that I feel are important to those that will be placing bets on the 2021 Portugal Masters.
The 2021 Portugal Masters will be played at the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course. This course is a par 71 that measures approximately 7,191 yards. This track features wide fairways and large undulating greens. The Portugal Masters debuted on the European Tour in 2007. The Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course has hosted the Portugal Masters every year that it has been played.
The key statistics I am focusing on this week are driving distance, birdie average per round, GIR (greens in regulation) putts per GIR, and bogey avoidance.
Now let's shift our focus to my favorite golf bets for the 2021 Portugal Masters!
Here are two golfers to consider placing on your card to finish in the top ten.
George Coetzee +700
If you are looking for a golfer to fit the narrative of a “course horse” than look no further as you have found your man. That man’s name is George Coetzee. Coetzee has played the Portugal Open eight times since 2011. In those eight tournaments just mentioned, George Coetzee has accumulated an impressive seven top 21 finishes, including a win at the 2021 Portugal Masters.
I also like the fact that George Coetzee arrives at this week's European Tour event in rather good form. Coetzee fired a third round 66 three weeks ago at the 2021 Open de España en route to an eventual 24th place finish on the European Tour. Additionally, Coetzee won the 2021 Vodacom Origins of Golf on the Sunshine Tour in August.
Mikko Korhonen +400
The 41 year old has accumulated two top 20 finishes in his last four tournaments played on the European Tour, including an eighth place result at the 2021 DS Automobiles Italian Open.
In relation to this week’s current listed Portugal Masters field, in the last six months of competitive golf played on the European Tour, Mikko Korhonen ranks ranks eighth in driving accuracy (62.0%), 11th in scrambling (60.3%), and 20th in GIR (greens in regulation-68.6%).
Mikko Korhonen certainly checks the box for me when it comes to previous event/course history. Korhonen has played this week's European Tour event five times since 2015. In those five tournaments just mentioned, Korhonen has accumulated three top 12 finishes, including a third place result at the 2016 Portugal Masters.
