Analysts: While only two previous European-bred horses have crossed the line first in this event, it appears that they may add to that total this year with half the field being foaled outside of North America. #2 New Mandate has won three straight races, including the Grade 2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes, and has gotten a workout in at Keeneland since shipping over from England. Jockey Lanfranco Dettori, who will be onboard New Mandate, has a 17% strike rate and a 33% WPS percentage in Graded Stakes events. #3 Abarta, a son of Into Mischief, used a huge close to finish second, moving up eight spots, to finish second in the one and one-sixteenth mile Grade 2 Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 4. So, Abarta gets distance well and has been training well for Brad Cox, whose horses have won 34% of their route races in route races and finished in the money 68% of the time. Abarta will also have blinkers on for the first time.#9 Battleground is half euro, although the son of War Front was foaled in Kentucky, and has been racing in Britain - - where he won a Grade 2 stakes race in July. #10 Ebeko, an Irish colt has two races under his belt on American soil and hit the board in four of five starts overall. Ebeko is 2-1-1-0 at this distance and the team of jockey Flavien Prat and trainer Peter Miller have had lots of success together. #11 Gretzky the Great has been terrific this year, demonstrating that he can win in sprint and route events. The Ontario-bred horse, who has been racing at Woodbine, has experience at this distance and has been training very well recently.
