Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colorado Rockies Free Pick - 8/2/2013
2013-08-02 06:05:00 EDT
Both the Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates look to bounce back from humiliating performances on Friday.
Pittsburgh was punished 13-0 by the visiting St. Louis Cardinals who apparently didn’t want to be swept and lose another game in first place in the National League Central. The Pirates were outhit 17-5 (Starling Marte had two of them) and committed the game’s only error, Pedro Alvarez’s.
Conversely, Colorado scored, but took the same result, falling 11-2 at the Atlanta Braves. The Rockies couldn’t drive in Runners In Scoring Position, going 3-of-13. Colorado scored via Corey Dickerson’s sacrifice fly and Jonathan Herrera’s RBI-single.
Jhoulys Chacin (9-5, 3.54 ERA) fires next from the mound for Colorado, having gone 3-2 so far on the road this season. Chacin’s away victories include the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and Washington Nationals, giving up three runs during 18 innings. In Chacin’s road defeats, SD and St. L only slugged in three runs during 11 frames.
Chacin also had two solid outings resulting in no-decisions, both were one-run Rockies losses. Last year on April 25 at Pittsburgh, Chacin conceded five runs during five innings to fall 5-1. Aganist Chacin, the Pirates are 18-of-57, with nine RBIs, three each from Garrett Jones and Andrew McCutchen.

Pittsburgh rolls out with Gerrit Cole (5-4, 3.56 ERA). The Pirates are 3-3 at PNC Park with Cole on the mound, losing all three of his July outings. Cole took defeats in all three, allowing eight runs during 17.1 frames to the New York Mets, Oakland Athletics and Philadelphia Phillies.
In June, Cole won all three of his PNC appearances, yielding eight runs during 18 innings. Based on their previous outcomes, you have a good feel for what Cole and Chacin are going to give you- Cole six frames, surrendering three runs and Chacin a run or two during six innings. If Colorado gets a better game from Chacin, it’s hard seeing Pittsburgh triumph.
