The Detroit Tigers and the Chicago White Sox face off on Saturday in Detroit in a battle of first place and last place in the American League Central.
The Detroit Tigers lead the AL Central and they added another game to their lead with a win on Friday. Price Fielder had two hits, Austin Jackson had a home run, and Jose Iglesias had a hit as the Tigers scored two runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Doug Fister allowed seven hits and a run while striking out two over 8.0 innings to get the win and raise his record to 10-5 while Joaquin Benoit earned his 11th save. For Saturday’s game, the Tigers start Max Scherzer, who is the leader in the AL Cy Young Award race. For the season, Scherzer has allowed 101 hits and 48 earned runs, while striking 164 over 143.2 innings for a 15-1 record and a 3.01 ERA.
The Chicago White Sox have simply come unglued at the seams as they lost again on Friday in Detroit. Alex Rios and Adam Dunn had two hits each and Alexei Ramirez added a hit as the White Sox scored one run on seven hits. Starting pitcher Hector Santiago allowed six hits and two runs while striking out seven over 7.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 3-7 one the season. For Saturday’s game, Chicago starts John Danks, who hasn’t won in over a month. For the season Danks has allowed 3 hits and 42 earned runs, while striking out 55 over 82.2 innings for a 2-8 record and a 4.57 ERA.
Detroit is 6-0 in their last six games, 5-1 in their last six games against the AL Central, and 40-15 in Scherzer’s last 55 starts as a home favorite. Chicago is 7-15 in their last 22 road games against a right-handed starter, 16-43 in their last 59 games, and 1-4 in Danks’ last five starts. Chicago is 15-37 in the last 52 meetings of these two.
While Friday’s game was competitive, the results were the same and counted the same as a lopsided win or loss, which this game could very much turn into with the Tigers winning once again.
