Tampa Bay Rays vs. San Francisco Giants Free Pick- 8/3/2013

The San Francisco Giants look to begin a hot streak versus the surging Tampa Bay Rays.

Is San Francisco about to go on a tear to take over the National League West? We all know the Giants are a second half team and with a 4-1 victory at Tropicana Field, they have won three in a item and are not that far back in the division. The trademark pitching has been solid in this short span, which is crucial if the offense continues to struggle. The work on the mound by Madison Bumgarner made things easy for the bats, with the lone run scored on seven hits and three walks, while striking out eleven in seven innings. The offense mustered eight hits and walked four times, with Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford going deep and driving in two runs apiece. The Giants turn to former Cy Young award winner Tim Lincecum Saturday to cool the bats of Tampa Bay. Lincecum is coming in off of a 2-1 loss to the Cubs in which he gave up both runs on solo homers in seven innings.

The room for error in the American League East is slim at best and non existent at times. Tampa Bay will vouch for that after Friday’s defeat left the Rays at 2-3 over the past five contests dropped the team from the top to second in the division. The work on the bump was a winnable effort, but the offense certainly wasn’t. Having said that, starter Chris Archer wasn’t in top form with all four runs allowed on seven hits and a trio of bases on balls through seven innings pitched. The TB offense had a few chances on their eight hit, three walk attack but mustered just a run scoring single off the bat of Ben Zobrist. Lefty David Price puts his three game winning streak on the line against San Francisco on Saturday. Price has been red hot in six outings since coming off the DL, going 5-1 in this stretch.

Both teams need this game and on the initial look, the Giants could be on the verge of breaking out and the Rays could be heading towards a slow down. I’ll back the Rays, but right now I am a bit skeptical and would stay away to be honest…
