The battle for first in the AL Central begins Monday when the Detroit Tigers visit the Cleveland Indians.
Red hot Detroit swept away the White Sox by a 3-2 count in 12 innings on Sunday to rack up win number eight in a item to maintain their lead over Cleveland in the American League Central. The Tigers arms and bats have been on the same page during a three week hot streak but after out scoring Chicago 8-3 in their three game set, it was the pitching that set the tone lately. Starter Rick Porcello continued his hot pitching with just a single run given up over 7.2 frames before Drew Smyly blew the save on Paul Konerko’s 8th inning homer that knotted the game at 2-2. The Tigers attack totaled nine hits and walked five times with Torii Hunter rapping a walk off single in the 12th. Detroit opens the huge series with Cleveland by sending Anibal Sanchez to the bump Monday. Sanchez has back to back victories under his belt with only one run allowed over 13 innings.
Cleveland has been red hot themselves and have needed to be or they would have lost plenty of ground to surging Detroit in the American League Central. The Indians picked up a 2-0 victory at Miami on sunday to log victory number ten in eleven outings. The Tribe are known for their big bats but needed a big day on the mound from Scott Kazmir who didn’t disappoint. Kazmir allowed two hits and issued a pair of base on balls, while striking out seven through six scoreless innings. The offense put together a ten hit, one walk attack that saw Michael Brantley and Lonnie Chisenhall rap run scoring singles. Corey Kluber gets the call Monday to kick off the series with the division rival Tigers. Kluber picked up a no decision in a 6-5 victory over the White Sox in which he gave up four runs on eight hits over 8.2 frames.
In my view, the two hottest teams in the Central battling it out for first in the division might be a better game to watch than bet. I’ll take the Tigers in what is trully a coin flip to me…
