Kansas City Royals vs. Minnesota Twins Free Pick- 8/5/13
2013-08-05 07:10:00 EDT
The Minnesota Twins head to Kauffman Stadium to battle the Kansas City Royals on Monday.
The Twins are not going to win the American League East citemn, but their play going forward could determine who does, which in a way is the very definition of a spoiler. Minnesota swept the visiting Astros following Sunday’s 3-2 victory for their third straight win heading in to a week day series with Kansas City. The Twins are a team that is always capable of beating any one but need both the arms and bats to produce consistenty to win. On Sunday the work on the mound proved to be all that was needed with starter Mike Pelfrey holding the Stros to a pair of runs over five innings, while Justin Morneau’s two run blast and Oswaldo Arcia’s solo shot provided enough scoring. The Twins send Kevin Correia to the bump Monday where he will face Kansas City for the second straight time. Correia only gave up two runs in a 4-3 defeat (ND) but did allow ten hits in six innings.
The good news for Kansas City is they are playing their best baseball of 2013. The bad news is the teams ahead of them in the American League Central, namely Cleveland and Detroit are doing the same so the Royals are maintaining their position in the division and not making up ground. Following a 6-2 victory over the Mets, KC has won ten of eleven behind another solid performance from both the bats and arms. Ervin Santana was the star on the mound with one run allowed on five hits and a trio of bases on balls through six innings pitched. The offense did not let him down with eleven hits and six walks, with Lucas Cain driving in a pair of runs, while Michael Moustakas nailed his 10th bomb of the year. Jeremy Guthrie toes the rubber in back to back starts versus Minnesota, riding the momentum of three consecutive victories. Guthrie defeated the Twins 4-3, giving up only two runs over six innings.
I have to admit I am surprised Kansas City is still winning and hasn’t faded, but Minnesota is not going to be easy pickings. I will go with the hotter team but I will be cautious as well with unplayable juice…
