The Oakland A’s and the Texas Rangers face off in Oakland on Sunday as the top two teams in the American League West close out their series.
The Oakland A’s bounced back from Friday’s loss to the Rangers by jumping out to an early lead and making it stand up for a win. Coco Crisp and Brandon Moss had two hits each and Yoenis Cespedes hit a homerun as the Rangers scored four runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Jarrod Parker allowed six hits and two runs while striking out six over 6.0 innings to get the win and go to 7-6 on the season, and Grant Balfour earned his 29th save. For Sunday’s game the A’s start A.J. Griffin, who has won his last two starts. For the season, Griffin has allowed 125 hits and 61 earned runs while striking out 111 over 140.2 innings for a 10-7 record and a 3.90 ERA.

The Texas Rangers are trying to stay close to the A’s in the AL West race, but they lost a game on the A’s losing Saturday’s game in Oakland. Ian Kinsler hit a home run and Leonys Martin, Elvis Andrus, and Adrian Beltre each had hits as the Rangers scored two runs on seven hits. Matt Garza allowed eight hits and four runs, while striking out five over 8.0 innings to take the loss, his first as a Ranger. For Sunday’s game, the Rangers start Derek Holland, who has lost his last two decisions. For the season, Holland has allowed 146 hits and 52 earned runs, while striking out 135 over 147 innings for a 8-6 record and a 3.18 ERA.
Oakland is 8-3 in their last 11 home games against a left-handed starter, 55-25 in their last 80 home games, and 16-3 in Griffin’s last 19 home starts. Texas is 5-1 in their last six games, 1-5 in their last six road games, and 6-1 in Holland’s last seven starts as a road underdog. Texas is 5-2 in the last seven meetings of these two.
The Total looks to be a shade low as both of these pitchers are solid, but neither is a shutdown type of guy so my first free pick is on the over. My second FREE PICK is on the winning side and I will give out that FREE PICK on Sunday’s 1stQuarter Podcast.
