Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Tampa Bay Rays Free Pick - 8/7/13

The Tampa Bay Rays try rebounding from a 6-1 beating at the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday to end a quick two-game set in Arizona this week.
TB struck first during the fourth on Evan Longoria’s home run, but the Rays’ lead didn’t last long. Jeremy Hellickson (10-5, 4.77 ERA) gave up five runs the next five outs the D-Backs were up. Eric Chavez started and ended Hellickson’s blood shed with an RBI-double. Cody Ross homered in between for Arizona, who also added a run during the bottom of the seventh off of Martin Prado’s double. The Diamondbacks only finished with one more hit, 8-7, than Tampa Bay.
Chris Archer (6-4, 2.65 ERA) goes next for the Rays who won all five of his July starts, but fell 4-1 to the San Francisco Giants Aug. 2 in his last outing. Archer yielded four runs during seven innings. On the road though Archer has been awesome since June 23 at the New York Yankees where he gave up a run during six frames in a 3-1 victory.
Archer also beat NY and the Toronto Blue Jays to end July, 1-0 and 4-3 in away offerings, conceding one run during 16 innings. In two June defeats, Archer was mauled for nine runs, eight earned, during 8.2 frames at the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians. Against Archer, Arizona is 0-of-3 with all at-bats credited to Cody Ross, who struck out twice.
The D-Backs come back with Zeke Spruill (0-1, 6.48 ERA). Versus the Cincinnati Reds in Spruill’s only previous work at Chase Field, he blanked Cincinnati for 2.1 innings of an 11-5 win and 4-2 loss for Arizona. At the Texas Rangers Aug. 1 Spruill yielded five runs during four frames to go down 7-1. TB probably is playoff bound, while the Diamondbacks are fading so go with the Rays snagging a split.
