Philadelphia Phillies vs. Chicago Cubs Free Pick - 8/7/13
2013-08-07 06:05:00 EDT
The struggling Philadelphia Phillies host the Chicago Cubs for the first meeting of these teams in 2013.
The Cubs haven’t been playing well, but seemed to be catching the slumping Phillies at the right time because they have been even worse. Things turn on a dime in this game and did so Tuesday in an 9-8 defeat at Citizen’s Bank Park for loss number five in a item and 8th in nine contests. The arms and bats just haven’t been able to get going, although it was the work on the mound that was costly Tuesday. Edwin Jackson couldn’t hold a 4-1 lead with seven runs given up on ten hits and two BB and the bats couldn’t keep up. The offense totaled 12 hits with Donnie Murphy slugging a three run bomb, while Anthony Rizzo went solo. Left-hander Travis Wood looks for a big rebound from a 6-2 loss to the Dodgers when he squares off with the Phillies. Wood gave up five runs on seven hits and five walks in just 3.1 innings.
It was bound to happen sooner or later, with the Phillies picking up a rare win on an even rarer offensive outburst. However, the key going forward will be doing more of the same and that’s an iffy proposition at best. The Phils have now won twice in 15 contests and are fighting for some respectability in the National League East, which Atlanta is running away with. This one was all about scoring, with starter Kyle Kendrick allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits, before Mr Undependable Jonathan Papelbon gave up three in the 9th. The bats pounded out 13 hits and walked twice with Chase Utley, Domonic Bitemn and Darin Ruf driving in two runs each. Cole Hamels toes the rubber against the Cubs, hoping to continue to rebound from a poor season. Hamels has recorded quality starts in five of his last six outings in which he has given up two runs or less.
I’ll make this as short and sweet as I can. I’m going with the Phillies, but under no circumstances would I lay the chalk because that’s financial suicide, especially with Papelbon ready, willing and able to blow a lead of any size…
