Seattle Mariners vs. Toronto Blue Jays Free Pick - 8/6/13

The Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners tussle again Tuesday after Toronto rallied past Seattle 3-1.
The M’s finished with one more hit than the Jays who had the only error, but couldn’t hold off a furious eighth inning by Toronto. Justin Smoak’s home run gave Seattle a very brief 1-0 lead during the bottom of the seventh. Hisashi Iwakuma (10-5, 2.75 ERA) relaxed ever so slightly afterward. Jose Reyes’ RBI-single tied things up with the Mariners prior to Mark DeRosa’s RBI-single putting the Blue Jays ahead for good.
Felix Hernandez (11-4, 2.30 ERA) goes to the hill next for Seattle at Safeco Field where he’s 4-2 only getting beaten by the Texas Rangers allowing nine runs, eight earned, during 12.1 innings. In Hernandez’s four Safeco victories the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Angels twice tallied eight runs, seven earned, during 30.1 frames.
At Toronto May 3 Hernandez won 4-0 with eight wonderful innings conceding just five hits. The Jays are 44-of-175 with a dozen RBIs, a fourth from Edwin Encarnacion, against Hernandez who duels with Josh Johnson (1-8, 6.60 ERA). If Johnson is going to have any chance of besting Hernandez he’s going to need help from Toronto offensively.
The Blue Jays though are 3-12 in Johnson’s starts scoring less than six runs 12 times. Johnson has lost his last six outings and is 0-5 for the year on the road yielding 24 runs, 22 earned, during 23.2 frames. Versus Johnson the M’s are 11-of-40 with a Humbero Quintero RBI. I’m not buying that small sample size in Seattle.
