Philadelphia Phillies vs. Chicago Cubs Free Pick - 8/8/13
2013-08-08 12:05:00 EDT
The Philadelphia Phillies and Citizen’s Bank Park host the Chicacgo Cubs Thursday.
The Cubs outlasted Philadelphia 5-2 behind some late scoring to snap a a five game slide. That was a rare offensive burst for a team that typically doesn’t put up a ton of runs on a consistent basis. Chicago got a little of every thing Wednesday, even though the bats didn’t do much until the 9th. Starter Travis Wood allowed both runs on six hits and a walk in 6.1 frames, while four relievers threw up zeros. The offense knocked out seven hits and walked three times, with Donnie Murphy clubbing a pair of homers and driving in four runs. Chicago is scheduled to start Jeff Samardzija on the mound to face the Phillies Thursday. Samardzija can be on or off and did a decent job in a 3-0 loss to the Dodgers, in which he allowed all three runs in six innings.
It was typical Philadelphia Wednesday, after erupting for nine runs the previous night, they could only muster two. The only good thing was Papelbon didn’t come in and screw around for three outs. Of course, the pen ruined the game for Cole Hamels, who allowed just two runs on six hits through seven innings pitched. Luis Garcia gave up two for the loss and Justin De Fratus, one more in a three run 9th. The offense mustered eight hits and walked four times, with Domonic Bitemn crushing home run number 25, while Chase Utley singled in the other. Rookie right-hander Ethan Martin makes his second career start versus the Cubs Thursday. Martin is hoping for a better outcome then we saw in his debut wher he allowed six runs in 4.1 innings of a 6-4 loss to Atlanta.
I am a die hard Phillies fan, but the product on the field can be unwatchable at times and, quite honestly, the fans have turned their attention to football already. I’m going with Chicago out of anger and frustration…
