The St. Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Dodgers face off on Thursday in St. Louis as they close out their four game series.
The St. Louis Cardinals have been one of the better teams in baseball, but after Wednesday’s loss they have dropped tow of three to the Dodgers. Jon Jay had three hits and Matt Carpenter and Carlos Beltran had two hits each as the Cardinals scored four runs on 10 hits. Starting pitcher Shelby Miller was forced to leave the game early when he was hit by a line drive and the bulk of the action fell to Jake Westbrook, who was shelled allowing 13 hits and nine runs over 4.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 7-7 on the year. For Thursday’s game, the Cardinals start Carlos Martinez who is considered a top-notch prospect. Martinez has had two brief stints this season, but this is easily his biggest action of the year.

The Los Angeles Dodgers bounced back from Tuesday’s loss in St. Louis, battering the Cardinals on Wednesday. Carl Crawford had four hits and Andre Ethier, Skip Schumaker, and Tim Federowicz each had three hits as the Dodgers scored 13 runs on 18 hits. Starting pitcher Ricky Nolasco allowed seven hits and three runs, while striking out five over 5.0 innings to get the win and go to 8-9 on the season. For Thursday’s game the Dodgers start Hyun-Jin Ryu, who has won his last three starts. For the season Ryu has allowed 129 hits and 47 earned runs, while striking out 111 over 134.1 innings for a 10-3 record and a 3.15 ERA.
St. Louis is 4-10 in their last 14 games, 5-15 against a team with a winning record, and 1-5 at home against a team with a winning record. Los Angeles is 9-1 against the NL Central, 21-7 in their last 28 road games against a right-handed starter, and 7-0 Ryu’s last seven starts. Los Angeles is 17-35 in their last 52 games in St. Louis.
The Total is set at eight and while it looks to be about right it is just a lean to the under for my Free Pick. My stronger play is on the winning side and I will post that Pick in the Premium Area.
