The St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs face off on Saturday at Busch Stadium for game two of their series.
The St. Louis Cardinals have been in a slide of late and it continued on Friday as they lost to the lowly Cubs. Jon Jay had three hits, Matt Holliday had two hits, and Allen Craig and David Freese each had hits as the Cardinals failed to score a run on seven hits. Starting pitcher Lance Lynn allowed three hits and three runs while walking five and striking out five over 6.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 13-6 on the season. For Saturday’s game the Cardinals start Michael Wacha who makes his fourth start of the year. For the season Wacha has allowed 17 hits and nine runs while striking out 14 over 17.2 innings for a 2-1 record and a 4.58 ERA.
The Chicago Cubs haven’t stopped trying and while they have had more downs than ups this season a win over their rivals on Friday, the Cards, always is a good thing for them. Anthiny Rizzo had a hit and two RBI’s, Junior lake had a hit, and Starlin Castro had a hit as the Cubs scored three runs on five hits in the win. Starting pitcher Christopher Rusin allowed seven hits and struck out five over 6.0 scoreless innings to get the win to go to 2-1 on the season and Kevin Gregg earned his 24th save. For Saturday’s game the Cubs start Carlos Villanueva who has lost his last four decisions. For the season Villanueva has allowed 94 hits and 47 earned runs while striking out 77 over 101.2 innings for a 2-8 record and a 4.16 ERA.
St. Louis is 11-4 in their last 15 home games, 4-12 in their last 16 games overall, and 0-8 in their last eight games as a favorite. Chicago is 5-1 in their last six games as a road underdog, 2-6 in their last eight games, and 0-5 in Villanueva’s last five starts. Chicago is 6-16 in their last 22 games in St. Louis.
