Arizona Diamondbacks vs. New York Mets Free Pick - 8/11/13

The New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks lace up the cleats Sunday in Phoenix for a rubber match.
NY bit back, drubbing Arizona 4-1 on Saturday. The D-Backs finished with two more hits, 11-9, but were 0-of-5 with Runners In Scoring Position. The Mets weren’t much better at 2-of-8, however New York did leave three fewer runners on base. Arizona’s Aaron Hill’s home run during the bottom of the seventh drove in the Diamondbacks only run. The Mets, meanwhile, scored on Juan Lagares’ HR and two Wilmer Flores’ RBI-singles.
New York’s Jonathon Niese (3-6, 4.32 ERA) tries to reverse his fortune of dropping six of his last seven decisions. Niese is 2-2 on the road with the Mets, 3-2 when he starts an away game so a NY win wouldn’t be shocking. The Mets made up for a 3.1-inning three-run Niese outing June 20 by winning 4-3 at the Atlanta Braves. Niese downed the Minnesota Twins and St. Louis Cardinals on the road, yielding seven runs, six earned, during 12.1 frames.
At Atlanta and the Colorado Rockies earlier this season, though, Niese was plowed for 10 runs during 10 innings of 9-4 and 11-3 losses. At Arizona on July 27, 2012, Niese was ambushed for eight runs, six earned, during six frames of an 11-5 defeat. The D-Backs are 15-of-56 with four RBIs, two Willie Bloomquist’s, versus Niese.

Arizona calls out Zeke Spruill (0-1, 6.48 ERA) to the mound for the rubber match. Spruill comes off a 7-1 defeat at the Texas Rangers, conceding five runs during four innings. At Chase Field, Spruill tossed 2.1 scoreless frames to the Cincinnati Reds in an 11-5 Diamondbacks victory and 4-2 Arizona loss. New York is in good position to duplicate Saturday.
