The Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Phillies face off on Saturday for game two of their NL East series.
The Washington Nationals are glad the Atlanta Braves have left town and they welcomed the Phillies in game one of their series by handing them a defeat. Ryan Zimmerman and Anthony Rendon had home runs and Ian Desmond, Wilson Ramos, and Adam LaRoche each had two hits as the Nationals scored nine runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Dan Haren allowed four hits and two runs, while striking out seven over 7.0 innings to get the win and go to 7-11 on the season. For Saturday’s game the Nationals start Taylor Jordan, who is making his eighth career start. For the season Jordan has allowed 45 hits and 17 earned runs while striking out 23 over 40.2 innings for a 1-3 record and a 3.76 ERA.

The Philadelphia Phillies had another miserable night as they fell behind early and were never in the game, losing to the Nationals. Chase Utley had two hits and Michael Young and Domonic Brown each had hits as the Phillies scored two runs on four hits. Starting pitcher John Lannan was battered, allowing nine hits and eight runs while striking out three over 5.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 3-5 on the season. For Saturday’s game, the Phillies start Cliff Lee, who has lost his last three starts. For the season Lee has allowed 132 hits and 52 earned runs while striking out 139 over 149.2 innings for a 10-5 record and a 3.13 ERA.
Washington is 8-1 in their last nine home games against a team with a losing record, 5-10 in their last 15 home games, and 1-4 in their last five games. Philadelphia is 8-21 in their last 29 road games, 1-10 in their last 11 games as an underdog, and 1-5 in Lee’s last six starts. Philadelphia is 1-5 in their last six games in Washington.
Lee is one of the best pitchers around when he is on his game and he looks to be an outright steal at this price, but the odds here are an indicator of just how bad the Phillies are. They are unplayable, even with Cliff Lee pitching.
