The Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds face off on Tuesday at Wrigley Field for game two of their series.
The Chicago Cubs kept the Reds offense in Check on Monday but they got no offense at all themselves as they dropped game one of the series. Donnie Murphy had two hits and Anthony Rizzo, Junior Lake, and David DeJesus all had hits as he Cubs were shutout on six hits. Starting pitcher Travis Wood allowed four hits and two runs while striking out five over 8.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 7-9 on the season. For Tuesday’s game the Cubs start Jeff Samardzjia who has lost four of his last five decisions. For the season Samardzjia has allowed 148 hits and 72 earned runs while striking out 158 over 153.1 innings for a 6-11 record and a 4.23 ERA.
The Cincinnati Reds didn’t get a lot of offense but they got enough to get the win on Monday. Brandon Phillips hit a two run home run, and Joey Votto and Jay Bruce had hits as the Reds scored two runs on four hits. Starting pitcher Mat Latos allowed six hit and struck out nine over 8.0 iscoreless innings to get the win and raise his record to 12-3 and Aroldis Chapman earned his 28th save. For Tuesday’s game the Reds start Homer Bailey who has won his last two starts. For the season Bailey has allowed 141 hits and 62 earned runs while striking out 148 over 149.2 innings for a -10 record and a 3.73 ERA.
Chicago is 4-11 in their last 15 games, 0-5 as a home underdog, and 2-5 in Samardzjia’s last seven starts. Cincinnati is 5-1 in their last six games, 39-16 against a team with a losing record, and 3-7 in Bailey’s last 10 starts. Cincinnati is 23-8 in their last 31 games in Chicago.
