The New York Yankees host the Los Angeles Angels in Monday night action.
The Angels still have plenty of time to get back in to the American League West race but just when they appear to be headed in the right direction something negative happens. Sunday was one of those times with Los Angeles holding a 5-0 lead at Cleveland and going for the sweep. Not to be as the Indians scored six straight runs for the win to end what looked like a three game winning streak. Jerome Williams allowed four runs in 5.2 innings before JC Giutierrez took the loss with two runs plated in 1/3 of an inning. The bats mustered eight hits and walked seven times with Mike Trout driving in two runs. The Angels are scheduled to send out Garrett Richards for his 4th straight start on Monday against the Yankees. Richards has been very good in his prior three with five runs given up on 13 hits and five BB in 18 innings.

The Yankees survived yet another blown save from the suddenly undependable Mariano Rivera to out last the red hot Tigers and Justin Verlander by a 5-4 count. Andy Pettitte escaped several jams and gave up one run through 4.1 frames on eight hits and three bases on balls. Rivera coughed up two runs in the top of the 9th and ironically picked up the win when the Bronx Bombers tallied in the bottom half of the 9th to get the win. The Yanks attack consisted of eight hits and walked once with Alex Rodriguez going deep and knocking in a pair of runs, while Alfonso Soriano went solo and Brett Gardner clubbed a walk off bomb in the 9th. Hiroki Kuroda toes the rubber in Monday's series opener with the visiting Angels. Kuroda has been the Yankees best hurler with quality starts in eight of his last ten outings in which he has gone 4-2 with four no decisions.
Neither team has been as good as expected although the Angels are probably more surprising with their struggles. I'll back the Yankees who have been a bit better over all...
