The Seattle Mariners travel to Tropicana Field to open a series with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Since winning the American League West is out of reach, the Mariners attention is likely on reaching .500 which would still be quite an accomplishment for a team that has not enjoyed a great deal of success the past several years. Hitting and scoring always seem to be an issue although Felix Hernandez came up with a gem in a 2-0 victory over Milwaukee on Sunday. Hernandez had his best stuff with a four hit shut out over eight frames to pick up win number 12. The Mariners managed only four hits with Justin Smoak going solo, with another run plated on a wild pitch. The Mariners hand the ball to Erasmo Ramirez who shoots for his third win in a row as a starter when he faces Tampa Bay. Ramirez didn't throw the ball well in the wins with eight runs plated on eleven hits and including three bombs in 12 frames.

Tampa Bay's numbers over the last few weeks tell us why the team no longer occupies the top spot in the American League East. Five consecutive defeats and losses in seven of ten have dropped the Rays to second and the danger is falling even further with Baltimore giving chase. TB took one on the chin in an 8-2 loss at red hot Los Angeles with the pitching struggling once again and the bats unable to come through. Starter Jeremy Hellickson lasted just three innings with four runs allowed on seven hits, while the relief corps couldn't stop the bleeding. The bats mustered just three hits and walked twice with Sam Fuld smacking an RBI triple and Wil Myers connecting on a sacrifice fly. Chris Archer is scheduled to be on the mound Tuesday to square off with the visiting Mariners. Archer gave up a run on two hits in 1.2 innings of work against Arizona before his forearm tightened.
I was looking at Tampa Bay here but the way the Rays have been playing has been under whelming which makes the juice impossible to lay...
