Oakland Athletics vs. Cleveland Indians Free Pick - 8/16/13

The Cleveland Indians hope to keep the wins coming in when they give the Oakland Athletics a visit.
Cleveland hasn’t enjoyed a great three weeks but the Indians are trying to right the ship as winners in three of four after a 9-8, 12 inning win at Minnesota. Even though the pitching was bad, the bats have shown some life in the wins and needed it Wednesday. Starter Carlos Carrasco was charged with four runs on ten hits in 4.1 innings with the relief corps unable to controll the Twins bats either. The Tribe hammered out 12 hits and walked three times, with Carlos Santana going solo while Jason Giambi homered and drove in three, with Mike Aviles and Michael Brantley knocking in five. Brantley also plated the game winner with a sacrifice fly in the 12th. Justin Masterson shoots for a big rebound from a pair of poor performances when he takes the mound against Oakland. Masterson has been hit hard with nine earned runs allowed on 14 hits and six walks in 11.1 innings.
Oakland hasn’t been tearing it up over the past several weeks and Texas was and the result is the Athletics have fallen to second in the American League West. This looks like a battle that will be decided in the final week of the season, which is exactly what we saw in 2012. After dropping two straight to Houston and being in danger of getting swept by the lowly Astros, the A’s responded with a much needed 5-0 victory on Thursday. Starter Sonny Gray dominated the Houston lineup with four hits and a base on balls issued over eight scoreless frames, while striking out eight. The offense didn’t waste the effort with a nine hit, five walk attack that saw Nate Frieman slam a two run homer and a two run double. AJ Griffin looks to break a two game winless skid when he faces Cleveland in Friday’s series opener. Griffin did not get a decision in a 6-4 victory at Toronto, despite giving up just two runs on five hits and six BB in 5.2 frames.
Cleveland is playing a bit better right now and are a dog with Masterson on the mound, which is very tempting. He has struggled in this match up, which gives me second thoughts, so perhaps a small play on the home team because it’s tough to find an angle here…
