The Pittsburgh Pirates refuse to go away as they took down the Cardinals on Wednesday. Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walked had two hits each and Pedro Alvarez and Garrett Jones each had home runs as the Pirates scored five runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Francisco Liriano allowed four hits and a run while striking out six over a full nine innings to get the win and go to 13-5 on the year. For Thursday’s game the Pirates start A.J. Burnett who has the lowest ERA of his career. For the season Burnett has allowed 114 hits and 44 earned runs while striking out 149 over 134.1 innings for a 5-8 record and a 2.95 ERA.
St. Louis is 13-7 in their last 20 home games, 2-10 in their last 12 games as a favorite, and 12-4 in Lynn’s last 16 starts. Pittsburgh is 7-2 in their last nine games as an underdog, 6-2 against a team with a winning record, and 4-11 in Burnett’s last 15 starts as an underdog. Pittsburgh is 7-2 in the last nine meetings of these two.
Lynn seems to get support while Burnett always seems to have no support mixed with tough luck but the Cardinals have been awful of late and the Pirates seem to have their number.
