The Detroit Tigers and the Kansas City Royals meet on Friday for game one of a doubleheader.
The Detroit Tigers are putting away the competition in the American League Central and they hope to drive the nail in the coffin of the Royals on Friday. In Thursday’s matchup Price Fielder hit a home run, Andy Dirks had four hits, and Torii Hunter and Brayan Pena each had two hits as the Tigers scored four runs on 13 hits. Starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez allowed seven hits and a run while striking out five over 7.1 innings to get the win and raise his record to 11-7 on the year and Joaquin Benoit earned his 16th save. For Friday’s first game the Tigers start Justin Verlander who has won his last two decisions. For the season Verlander has allowed 157 hits and 63 earned runs while striking out 154 over 158.2 innings for a 12-8 record and a 3.57 ERA.

The Kansas City Royals got out to an early lead on Thursday but it was gone in a hurry and they never led again. Eric Hosmer and Chris Goetz had two hits and Alex Gordon and Justin Maxwell each had hits as the Royals scored one run on seven hits. Starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie allowed 13 hits and four runs while striking out two over 7.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 12-9 on the year. For game one on Friday the Royals start Danny Duffy who has seen limited action this year. For the season Duffy has allowed six hits in 3.2 innings for a 0-0 record and a 4.91 ERA.
Detroit is 20-7 in their last 27 games, 6-0 in their last six home games against a left-handed starter, and 7-3 in Verlander’s last 10 starts against a team with a winning record. Kansas City is 8-2 in their last 10 road games, 19-8 in their last 27 games, and 4-0 in Duffy’s last four road starts. Kansas City is 1-9 in their last 10 games in Detroit.
