Game Three of the series and two of the day between the Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers will take place Friday night.

Detroit took the opener 4-1. KC struck first during the first when Alex Gordon singled in Chris Getz, but didn't have another response. The Royals' Jeremy Guthrie (12-9, 4.35 ERA) was good through seven innings, surrendering four runs off 13 hits. The Tigers got 7.1 frames from Anibal Sanchez (11-7, 2.50 ERA).

Detroit Tigers vs. Kansas City Royals Game 2 Free Pick - 8/16/13

Kansas City was scored upon during the bottom of the first and fifth thanks to Prince Fielder, Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera hits. The Royals' three big boppers Billy Butler, Gordon and Salvador Perez were 1-of-11 with an RBI and a walk.

James Shields (7-8, 3.33 ERA) seeks his third winning streak of the season in Game Three. Shields' second win streak included back-to-back victories at the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins July 26 and Aug. 1. Shields yielded two runs during 13 innings. Shields' first though came June 28 and July 9 surrendering four runs during 13.1 frames at Minnesota and the New York Yankees. Shields is 5-3 altogether on the road. Chicago, the Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics strapped Shields with away defeats by drilling in five runs during 21 innings.

Needless to say, even without getting into road no-decisions (Shields gave up nine runs during 32 frames), Shields has been awesome. KC, after all, is 3-2 in Shields' no-decisions, dropping games 1-0, 4-3 and 6-4. Detroit dumped Shields 4-1 July 21, though, by driving in three runs during seven innings. At Comerica Park April 25, however, Shields let in three runs during eight frames to win 8-3. The Tigers are 77-of-236 with 23 RBIs, nine from Jhonny Peralta, versus Shields.

Detroit will next go with with Jose Alvarez (1-2, 5.03 ERA). The Tigers triumphed Alvarez's first two trips, but have been beaten in his last two, including by the Los Angeles Angels 7-4. At Comerica Alvarez is 1-1 allowing four runs during 5.2 innings in a loss. In Alvarez's one home victory, the Cleveland Indians drove in a run during six frames.

The Royals take comfort in knowing that Detroit's been outscored 19-15 when Alvarez has gone to the mound, not once scoring for more than four runs. If Kansas City is able to find the scoreboard early, the Royals could cruise in the evening.
