Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals Free Pick - 8/18/13

The St Louis Cardinals look to begin a hot streak against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.
The Cardinals ship has developed a few leaks over the past several weeks and they are in damage control after dropping out of the National League Central lead. A 4-0 victory at Wrigley Field is what the Redbirds hope is the start of something big and a return to their strong pitching and clutch hitting. Joe Kelly was at the top of his game with four hits and three BB given up in six scoreless innings with three relievers finishing the job. The offense managed four hits and two walks with Yadier Molina leading the way with a two run jack. St Louis gives the ball to Adam Wainwright for Sunday’s start against the Cubs. Wainwright has not won in four outings and is only 3-3 with four no decisions in his last ten appearances with seven quality starts.
A day after crushing the Cardinals 7-0, the Cubs found the shoe on the other foot in Saturday’s defeat. The set back was Chicago’s fifth in sixth games and prevented them from making the Cards postseason drive a bit more uncomfortable. The Cubbies have seen highs and lows from both their arms and bats in 2013 so this was not a huge surprise. Starter Travis Wood did not have his finest hour with all four runs given up on four hits and a free pass through five innings pitched. The offense didn’t help the cause with eight hits and three walks unable to plate a single run. Edwin Jackson hopes to break in to the win column versus the rival Cardinals on Sunday. Jackson has struggled the last two times out with eleven runs allowed on 16 hits and five BB in ten innings.
I don’t think we can predict what either team brings to the table Sunday after the results we saw over the first two games. I am leaning to the Cards but their recent play makes this just a pick for me…
