The Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals face off on Saturday for game two of their series at Wrigley Field.
The Chicago Cubs haven’t had a lot to cheer about since the trade deadline but they snapped their four game losing streak on Friday by clobbering the Cardinals. Wellington Castillo, Donnie Murphy, and Darwin Barney had two hits each as the Cubs scored seven runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Jake Arrieta was exceptional allowing just two hits and striking out seven over 7.0 innings to get his first win as a Cub. For Saturday’s game the Cubs start Travis Wood who has lost three of his last four decisions. For the season Wood has allowed 118 hits and 51 earned runs while striking out 109 over 153 innings for a 7-9 record and a 3.00 ERA.

The St. Louis Cardinals have been struggling the past month and we saw it magnified on Friday, as they weren’t even close to a win against the Cubs. Carlos Beltran had two hits and Matt Carpenter and Allen Craig each had hits as the Cardinals were shutout on two hits. Starting pitcher Jake Westbrook allowed eight hits and seven runs, six earned, while striking out two over 6.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 7-8 on the season. For Saturday’s game the Cardinals start Joe Kelly who has won his last three decisions. For the season Kelly has allowed 72 hits and 25 earned runs while striking out 49 over 71.2 innings for a 3-3 record and a 3.14 ERA.
Chicago is 4-13 in their last 17 home games, 34-70 against a team with a winning record, and 3-10 in Wood’s last 13 starts. St. Louis is 3-9 in their last 12 road games, 13-6 against a team with a losing record, and 5-1 in Kelly’s last six starts. Chicago is 1-5 in Wood’s last six starts against St. Louis.
I don’t really like this game as I give the Cardinals a slight edge here after giving out the Cubs in the Premium Area on Friday but I don’t like the price so the Cardinals are just a lean here for me.
