The Detroit Tigers and the Kansas City Royals face off on Sunday in Detroit as they close out their weekend series.
The Detroit Tigers are running away with the American League Central and they have done it by dominating against the teams in their division. On Saturday Miguel Cabrera had two hits including his 39th home run, Price Fielder had two hits including a home run, and Victor Martinez and Omar Infante each had two hits as the Tigers scored six runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Doug Fister allowed 10 hits but just three runs while striking out six over 6.1 innings to get a no decision as Joaquin Benoit got the win to go to 3-0 on the season. For Sunday’s game the Tigers start Max Scerzer who is looking like the AL Cy Young Award winner. For the season Scherzer has allowed 112 hits and 52 earned runs while striking out 181 over 164.1 innings for a 17-1 record and a 2.85 ERA.
The Kansas City Royals have learned how to win this season but it has also become apparent that they are going to come up short of the post season. On Saturday Salvador Perez had two hits including a home run, and Mike Moustakas, Emilio Bonifacio, Chros Gets, and Alcides Escobar each had two hits as the Royals scored five runs on 14 hits. Starting pitcher Wade Davis allowed eight hits and four runs while striking out one and lasting just 3.2 innings but it was Aaron Citem who took the loss to fall to 7-4 on the season. For Sunday’s game the Royals start Bruce Chen who hasn’t lost this season. For the year Chen has allowed 55 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out 53 over 72.1 innings for a 5-0 record and a 1.62 ERA.
Detroit is 20-7 in their last 27 games overall, 6-1 in their last seven home games against a left-handed starter, and 42-16 in Scherzer’s last 58 home starts. Kansas City is 10-3 in their last 13 road games, 19-8 in their last 27 games overall, and 3-9 in Chen’s last 12 road starts. Kansas City is 3-10 in their last 13 games in Detroit.
Betting against Scherzer has been the fast track to losing money this year so I am going to lay the big number and take the win.
